I made the biggest mistake of my life when, acting upon the belief that had been ingrained in me since early childhood that education was the key to a prosperous future, I pursued an undergraduate and graduate degree, both which required loans. I do not recall signing any paperwork with Sallie Mae, yet they somehow acquired several of my loans. I just graduated in August, and even before then they were saying I was late on my payments, that I needed to pay more than my monthly income per month, and that I could not defer my loans because I had done so once before (I found out that was a lie). They have called my job and threatened my mother, and I HAVE been paying them WHAT I CAN. A simple Google search returned an overwhelming number of other individuals in the same situation, which leads me to ask the naysayers, are there really that many people who have no intention on repaying their student loans, or is there something exceptionally wrong with this company?
What are the future ramifications of the havoc wreaked on the credit of millions of borrowers by Sallie Mae? Well, I can tell you personally I have no money saved up, do not make big purchases, and will probably never own a home. I ruined my own American dream, ironically as I pursued my American Dream!
