Ripoff dishonest fraudulent billing

I have been trying since July to resolve this problem. I know several other are as well.in July I received a telephone bill Verizon (as usual).included in my charges were two (2) calls to the Solomon Islands. One for 1 minute, the other for approx. 30 minutes.

I have learned that these calls are the supposed acts of "modem jacking". A term I believe to be similar to "car-jacking". Meaning someone/something takes control, by force or deception of your modem. It then commences to make long distance calls (usually out of the country). These calls are to "Adult Sites".

Now, the story goes like this: Someone, somehow inadvertly or knowingly downloads a program onto their computer from a website. This program (I am told) then re-routes the call you are already in (usually a local number call for dial-up customers) and switches you to a long distance company (in my case, Global Crossing) and you are charged for a long distance call (which you really didn't make).

Here's the "glitch" they didn't expect! Long distance calls CANNOT be made from my number. I can't make them, my computer can't them. The ONLY way I can call long distance is to purchase a "calling card" from my local Wal-Mart or similar store. I've been told (by my telephone company) that "even though you do not have a long distance carrier, yuo can still make long distance calls by using a 10-10 number" PHOOEY! I tried to call a popular 10-10-XXX number. I got...[error tones]..."We're sorry, the number you are calling cannot be completed as dialed..." Hmmmmm. So my question is: How did my computer call ANY long distance number, which by the way I was told could be done even if my computer was TURNED OFF!?

This is a SCAM! There's no denying it. My situation is sort of like this little story:

"Congratulations! Your son kicked a 40 yard, game winning field goal! What are you going to do now?" Well, since my son has been in a wheel chair all of his life and has no legs, how did he kick the ball?"

Same thing here. Long distance calls can not be made from my phone line unless you use a calling card which uses a toll free number to call.

I've complained to my local phone company (Verizon), I've complained to USBI (the billing company for Global Crossing) I've complained to my state Public Utilities Commission.

My next step is the F.C.C. Global Crossing will never see one penny of the money they charged me. I just hope they can be stopped before some innocent person is scammed again!
Thank You
