Complaint / Review
Action Appliance
Took advantage of my elderly parents

My 78 year old mother who is on oxygen 24/7 and my 86 year old father who is legally blind called Action Appliance to repair their Amana washing machine. It was spraying water all over the basement.

Action Appliance showed up did their $65 diagnostic test and came up with a hose drain needing to be repaired. They repaired that and while in there lead my mother to believe that the belt for the transmission was about to break. She gave them a check for the hose drain and belt repair in full. The repairman left and told her he'd be back the next day with parts.

The next day, Saturday, they replaced the belt then started the testing process during which they smelled something burning, like rubber. She was told the transmission now needed to be replaced. She once again gave them a check for the full amount, parts and labor and was told they would be back the next day.

Sunday they came out and replaced the transmission. Guess what the machine still smelled like burning rubber when it ran and it wouldn't cycle. Now she was told she needed to replace the motor. At this point she had already paid Action Appliance $540.00 and still didn't have a machine that worked and needed to buy a new motor!

I called Action Appliance from Portland, OR to try and resolve the issue. I spoke with Cathy who was immediately defensive. I suggested that they had taken advantage of my mother and at some point should have suggested a new machine as opposed to continuing to pump money into a machine that needed all of these repairs. She said that wasn't their job, and although it was a lot of money my mother had spent, that was too bad.

I told her not to bother to bring the motor, we would find someone else the complete the repairs. At which point, Cathy told me that if I did that, I would have to remove all of the parts they had already installed and give them back. My argument was that my mother had already paid for these parts and we WOULD not give them back and we would not let them repair the machine. Cathy hung up on me.

10 minutes later Tara, from Action Appliance called my mother who then referred her to me. Tara and I had a very calm conversation and agreed that they install the motor at no charge.By 5 pm the motor was installed. Guess what still smelled like burning rubber and the machine would still not run through its cycles.

The repairman had an ah Ha moment and checked the transmission belt and found that he had installed the wrong one. My mother had paid over $240 for the new transmission that she did not need. I have tried to reach Tara since Tuesday to make an attempt to get a refund of at least partial amount of the bill and I am not able to get thru to her.

I logged on to the Better Business Bureau and found that they have had 102 complaints in the last 36 months and the majority of them are for just this. There is a definite common thread that runs thru all of the complaints.

There should be a way that this business is shut down. They took advantage of an elderly couple on a fixed income! I will continue to pursue this action until I receive some satisfaction.
