We called them to fix our garage door and were told we needed two (we currently had one) new springs. After some discussion, the repairman said that the second spring is for safety (to catch the door if the other stops working), but if we had done fine with just one, he would replace it. He also mentioned that he thought the spring we had had on our garage door was too big (it had worked fine for several years).

After eight days, the garage door stopped working again, I didn't have a great deal of confidence in Discount Garage Doors at that point, so I called another garage door repairman. He took one look at the spring on our door and immediately said that it was too small for our door. After looking further, he said the smaller spring that DGD had installed had stripped the gears of our garage door motor and the gears or box would need to be replaced—a larger spring would also need to be installed.

I was pretty upset as we had just paid a lot of money the week before for the too small spring. I called DGD and told them what the other repairman had said and that all I wanted from them was either a refund or a new spring (I would give them back the part they had installed). They said that they wanted a chance to have one of their repairmen assess the situation and we made an appointment for 10 A.M. The next day.

That evening we went out to dinner (6 P.M.) and when we returned (8 P.M.) there was a Discount Garage Door card in our front door. I didn't think much of it—I thought that maybe a repairman was going to try to catch us on his way home from work that day, but would still come for the appointment the next day. Of course, no one showed for their appointment with us the next morning so I called.

I spoke with an assistant who said that someone had come by the afternoon before (untrue), and that the person had tried to call me on my cell phone and at home (untrue, since I have caller ID on both and there were NO calls from anyone that afternoon). I told her this, she said there was nothing they could do to help me. The manager called me that afternoon and said that they were not "lying" that someone had tried to call me—I told her that was impossible since I have caller ID. She then told me the only way she could help me was to let THEM fix the gears in my box and the spring—not for free of course! Ridiculous!

I told her that they were terrible and that I would file a complaint with the BBB (which I have done, but it takes a while for things to get going) and would tell everyone I know what they had done to me!

I had the door repaired by the other company, and a month later, it's running well!
