I had a custom garage built, about 8 yrs ago. When the first set of torsion springs broke, I called Metro Garage Door to replace them. Their set of springs broke at about 42 months (3 1/2 yrs). I called them and said "in my 35 yrs of home ownership I've never replaced a garage door spring".
I asked them what would be the problem that the spring has broken again in 3 1/2 yrs. They told me it was 'normal'. At that point I told them that I as a licensed engineer. They hung up, and never called back. Besides the spring breaking, it stripped the gears in my GDO - I had to buy $50 in replacement parts to fix it.
I went on the internet, and found a supplier of garage door springs. After finding out the weight of my door, I purchased 42" long springs.
The springs that Metro Garage door installed were 27". I now understand how they make a lot of money be installing marginal parts, and keep comming back, again and again for a simple repair that would last the life of the home.
Bottom line is that these GDO people have a racket, beware of it!
