Recently had a very small bungalow that was in need of painting. I received several bids on the job. Pat Tolan, owner of L.A. Painting at the time gave me the best quote for the money. He was going to pressure wash the house and the back deck and paint the house. The 4 upper windows were in need of repair and he quoted me a specific price for those repairs.
This job should have only taken at the most 2 weeks to complete, 2 months later the final invoice was delivered. What was promised on the initial quote and the final invoice are two very different documents. He wanted to charge me extra for painting the lower windows - that they were not part of the initial whole house quote, found areas that were not painted, of the 4 upper windows he repaired he broke one and did not inform me I found the broken window. He did not offer to have the window fixed, he acutally charged me for each side of the window, a fee for working on the outside area of the window and then a fee for working on the inside trim area, whoever heard of breaking up pricing when doing repair work on one project. Needless to say that this experience was not a positive one.
My advice to you, if you choose to use L.A. Painting, be prepared to babysit. I would say that getting specific tasks in writting is the way to go with this guy, but even his written quotes he will change because he says it was not what he meant, and this is after the quote is accepted and work has started he will send you a new one corrected to reflect what he claims he meant. A side note, he painted most of the house very late in the afternoon with limited lighting.
