We purchased a 35 year old home a couple years ago with the FA warranty. We continued the policy because both the inside and outside AC/heating units were original!!! We knew they were on their last leg. After several sucessful calls and repait to the unit, the A/C finally died.
A call to FA and two and a half days later, (90 degrees) a technician shows up and pronounces the outside unit dead, the inside one on life support. He also says the inside unit will only allow for a 10 SEER unit. He also says that it makes sense to have a 12-14 SEER unit, so recommends we use our money to purchase an inside unit and more of our money to upgrade the one that FA would give us.
OH, yeah, we will also have to pay $250 for disposal of old unit and upgrade of our existing system.
We were also offered a "buy-out" option of $420. What are they thinking? Do they really think I can replace an A/C system on a 2,300 square feet home in TX for $420??? That wouldn't get me a decent window unit for the master bedroom. Looks like I'm locked into using their guys for a substandard unit that is underrated and not fully compatable with my inside unit. Or cough up $ just to get a US Gov. Recommended unit (13 SEER).
I've had good experiences thus far, and regret the need to warn others of my predicament. Read the contract!!! They will replace like for like, with no regard for the age of the original product.
