Dealing with a Sedgwick claim? Finding the responsible party, reaching your adjuster, and where to appeal

Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. is a claims administrator. Sedgwick's own privacy policy says: "In delivering most of our services Sedgwick and its subsidiaries acts on behalf of an insurer and/or insurance broker," and that in that situation the insurer's or broker's privacy policy applies "as they will be the controller of the data we process on their behalf"; that passage is about personal data and does not say who decides a particular claim. Its workers' compensation page is written to employers ("Your workers get access to the greatest network of experts and the best care"). Which party is responsible for a given claim, and how and by when to appeal, is set out in your own claim or denial letter, the insurance policy or plan document (for an employer benefit plan, the Summary Plan Description) and, for workers' compensation, your state's rules. Deadlines and review procedures differ by state and by type of plan, so check the ones that apply to you.

  • Start or check a claim: Sedgwick's "Help with my claim" page says to "check your mail and email for an informational packet" and to register an OmniClaims (mySedgwick) account at www.mysedgwick.com. Per Sedgwick, the portal lets you view claim status and payment history, message your claims team, add absence and return-to-work dates, update your contact details and upload files.
  • Reach your adjuster: Sedgwick says an adjuster "will be your primary contact," and its privacy policy states that "all queries regarding your claim or casefile should be communicated directly to your Sedgwick claim or casefile representative." For U.S. and Canada claimants Sedgwick offers "Chat with us anytime 24/7/365" (a virtual chatbot named Carey that directs you to your claims team) and a separate live chat for technical help with the portal. Sedgwick's Contact page did not list a phone number on 2026-09-30; use the number on your own claim paperwork. The 901-415-7400 number on Sedgwick's letterhead is its Memphis corporate office and is not described there as a claims line. Sedgwick's mySedgwick help says: "Log in to mySedgwick and use the Communication Center available from the My Claims page" for help with a claim, and that for questions about your claim you should "Contact the examiner from the Communication Center"; it describes the Carey chat as able to answer questions or "put you in touch with a live customer service agent when one is available." That help page and the Help with my claim page, as opened on 2026-09-30, do not mention appeals or disputes of claim decisions.
  • Trouble logging in to mySedgwick: Sedgwick's portal technical-difficulties page lists Technical Support at toll-free (866) 647-7610 or (901) 415-7800, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time Monday through Friday, and Live Chat help from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time Monday through Friday. Sedgwick's help text says that for questions about a claim itself you should use the Communication Center rather than technical support.
  • Medical providers with a payment question: Sedgwick's accounts-receivable page says: "If you are a medical service provider with a question about a payment, please call our bill review call center at 866-495-7844. We are open Monday thru Friday from 7:00AM to 7:00PM central standard time." Other service providers are directed to a short web form on that page.
  • Keep a record: note dates, names and claim numbers of every call, chat and letter, keep copies of what you upload, and ask for decisions and the reasons for them in writing.
  • Workers' compensation dispute: contact your state's workers' compensation agency, because denial-review procedures and deadlines are set state by state. The U.S. Department of Labor lists them at dol.gov/agencies/owcp/wc ("Click on the state or territory listed on the right to find the name and address of the appropriate state workers' compensation official") and says that "all states and territories are linked to their respective workers' compensation webpage." As one example of how state rules read, the Tennessee Bureau of Workers' Compensation says that if the adjuster denies a claim you have a right to challenge the decision, that in most cases the deadline to file the request is one year from the date of injury or from the last temporary disability or medical benefit, whichever is latest, that a denial of recommended medical care can be appealed through utilization review, and that a Court of Workers' Compensation Claims compensation order can be appealed to the Appeals Board within thirty calendar days of its issuance (Tennessee pages opened 2026-09-30; other states differ).
  • Disability benefits under an employer plan covered by ERISA: use the plan's appeal procedure and deadline in your denial letter. The Department of Labor page "Filing a Claim for Your Health or Disability Benefits" says a plan must decide a disability claim within a reasonable period but not later than 45 days after receiving it (extendable by up to 30 days if the plan tells you why before the 45 days end), that you have "at least 180 days to file an appeal" (check your plan for a longer period), and that an appeal must be decided not later than 45 days after the plan receives it, with up to an additional 45 days in special circumstances. It also says the plan must provide claimants, "on request and free of charge, copies of documents, records, and other information relevant to the claim for benefits," and advises you to "include in your appeal all information related to your claim," including any additional information or evidence you want considered, and to get it to the person named in the denial notice before the appeal deadline. EBSA benefits advisors can be reached at 1-866-444-3272 or askebsa.dol.gov. Plans not covered by ERISA can follow different rules, so read your plan documents.
  • Leave (FMLA) questions: the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division lists 1-866-487-9243 (toll-free).
  • Property, liability or other insurance-type claims: state insurance departments accept complaints; the NAIC says: "Having a problem with an insurance company or agent? Find your state insurance department and file a complaint." Regulators also license third-party administrators (Oregon and South Dakota orders below).
  • Privacy or data questions: Sedgwick's privacy policy (updated 09/16/2026) gives its Americas privacy team as [email protected] or 8125 Sedgwick Way, Memphis, TN 38125. For U.S. state privacy-law requests it lists an online request form, the same email, mail to "ATTN: Privacy Office" at that address, or 800-625-6588.

Sedgwick's Legal page lists a complaints procedure or complaint policy under its United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia sections; no U.S. complaints procedure was listed on that page on 2026-09-30.

Oregon and South Dakota consent orders and California workers' compensation records

Oregon (April 25, 2023). The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation entered Case No. INS-23-0020, a "Final Order to Cease and Desist and Final Order Assessing Civil Penalty, Entered by Consent," against Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. The order finds that from January 1, 2020 to May 31, 2022 Sedgwick received 30 automobile total loss claims in Oregon; in 26 it "did not send insureds the required Oregon total loss notice for cash settlements," and in two it sent only a partial notice, in violation of ORS 742.554(2) and OAR 836-080-0240(4). It orders Sedgwick to cease and desist and to pay a $10,000 civil penalty, of which $3,000 is suspended (to be waived three years after the order if there is no further violation) and $7,000 was payable with the order. A Sedgwick officer (SVP Managing Counsel) signed the consent on April 14, 2023, stating that "the factual allegations stated herein are true and correct" and that Sedgwick "voluntarily consents to the entry of this Order without force or duress." The order also records that Sedgwick has been licensed in Oregon as a third-party administrator since September 2017.

South Dakota (February 2023). The South Dakota Division of Insurance signed a Consent Order with Sedgwick on February 28, 2023 (Sedgwick's representative signed February 21, 2023), resolving a licensing matter tied to Sedgwick's June 1, 2022 third-party-administrator renewal application. The Division alleged that Sedgwick failed to timely file a First Report of Injury form with the South Dakota Department of Labor, failed to respond to the Department and to pay an assessed $100 fine, and failed to timely respond to the Division's inquiries of July 18, 2022. The order states that Sedgwick "neither admits to nor denies any violations," requires a $2,000 penalty, and approves the TPA renewal.

California workers' compensation. Business Insurance reported on January 7, 2016 that Sedgwick agreed on December 29, 2015 to pay about $1.13 million to settle 75 administrative penalties that California's Division of Workers' Compensation had assessed over utilization review; the article says the state alleged failures to respond to treatment-authorization requests and that only licensed physicians may modify, delay or deny requests, and that Sedgwick did not admit wrongdoing (this page relies on the news report, not the settlement document). Separately, the Division's 2024 audit report (Exhibit 1) lists two Sedgwick locations: Sedgwick / Riverside (206 files audited, 548 administrative penalties cited, $294,588.00 total violations identified and subject to assessment, $0.00 balance due) and Sedgwick / Roseville (59 files audited, 46 penalties cited, $7,345.00 identified, none subject to assessment). The Division's report says 32 of its 40 audit subjects that year met the routine audit standard. Reports for other years list other Sedgwick locations. The California Office of Self-Insurance Plans links a roster of third party administrators on its TPA page; the Excel version of that roster, opened on 2026-09-30, lists Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. under certificate number 011 with 16 adjusting-location entries (the file does not state its own date).

The CFPB's complaint-database company lookup returned no company named "Sedgwick" on 2026-09-30. Other federal or state actions that were not located in the sources checked on 2026-09-30 may exist; state insurance and workers' compensation agencies publish their own records.

Company background and data-security notices

Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. is headquartered at 8125 Sedgwick Way, Memphis, Tennessee 38125. The Oregon order describes it as "an Illinois corporation domiciled in California" with its principal place of business in Memphis; the South Dakota order describes it as "a subsidiary of Sedgwick Global, Inc." The Better Business Bureau lists a business start and incorporation date of December 22, 1969 (raw profile data) and "Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc" as an alternate name of its "Sedgwick CMS" profile. The company says it has served clients for "more than 50 years," serves "59% of the Fortune 500," has "33K+ colleagues" and operates in 80 countries, and describes itself as a leader in claims administration, benefits administration, loss adjusting and product recall (company claims, not independently verified here).

On November 12, 2024 Sedgwick announced a $1 billion minority investment led by Altas Partners, saying it was "Carlyle maintaining its control position in partnership with the investor group and the Sedgwick management team," with CDPQ and Onex continuing as minority shareholders.

On September 24, 2026 Sedgwick announced "the launch of its new Carrier and Captive Solutions entity," which it describes as "a purpose-built, scalable operating model for carriers and alternative risk takers, with delegated authority and program administrators." The release is addressed to carriers, captives and managing general agents, not to individual claimants, and it says Sedgwick's majority shareholder is The Carlyle Group, with Stone Point Capital LLC, Altas Partners, CDPQ, Onex and other management investors as minority shareholders (company statements). On August 20, 2026 it also announced the appointment of a Managing Director, Carrier & Captive Solutions, a management role aimed at carrier and captive clients.

On May 4, 2026 Sedgwick announced Omni, which it calls a "proprietary digital ecosystem for claims and risk management"; according to the release, its AI "has been expanded to assist with document and call summarization, digital triage, severity modeling, automated reserving, fraud detection, and quality oversight." Sedgwick's Chief Transformation Officer is quoted in the release saying that "claims handling remains an expert-led activity." These are company statements about its tools; the release does not say how any individual claim decision is made.

Data-security notices. Three notices were found in state breach records checked on 2026-09-30, each reported separately and each describing different data:

  • California Attorney General's breach list: a sample notice filed by Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. (listed 01/12/2021) says that on July 31, 2020 Sedgwick "detected unusual activity within two of our data centers," that records on Cunningham Lindsey data servers were accessed without authorization between July 31 and August 2, 2020, and that information may have included name, address, contact details, date of birth, Social Security or other government ID number, financial account information, medical-related and health-insurance information and employment records; one year of Experian credit monitoring was offered.
  • Massachusetts filing 2025-907: a notice dated April 3, 2025 to people whose vehicle buyback claims Sedgwick coordinates says that on November 14, 2024 "an unauthorized party gained access to a Sedgwick employee's email," and that information may have included name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license number, phone number, email address and VIN; 12 months of Experian credit monitoring was offered.
  • Massachusetts filing 2026-276 (file published by Massachusetts on or about February 27, 2026): a notice from Managed Care Advisors/Sedgwick Government Solutions to affected World Trade Center Health Program Nationwide Provider Network members describes an incident involving single-case and letter-of-agreement records with the member's treating providers; it says a subset may have included the member number, name, date of birth and certified health conditions, that Mandiant is conducting a forensic analysis, that the FBI was notified, that the cause was "a vulnerability in the server application," and that 12 months of Kroll credit monitoring and identity restoration is offered; the filed template names enroll.krollmonitoring.com for activation and a call line of 1-844-425-7438, and recipients should follow the enrollment instructions and deadline in their own letter. The filed template does not state when the incident was discovered. In coverage dated January 2, 2026, The Record quoted Sedgwick as saying that the affected system was an "isolated file transfer system," that Sedgwick Government Solutions "is segmented from the rest of our business," and that there is "no evidence of access to claims management servers." Other websites describe different data; only what the notice itself states is reported here.

If you received a letter, follow its enrollment instructions and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze through the credit bureaus; the notices point to identitytheft.gov for FTC guidance.

Complaint record: USAComplaints, BBB, ComplaintsBoard, Trustpilot and CFPB, reported separately

Several sources track complaints about Sedgwick; they are reported separately and are not added together. Each is one party's account or a platform's count and none is a finding.

  • USAComplaints: 78 approved posts whose offender field names Sedgwick ("Sedgwick CMS" and spelling variants) are linked to this profile; they were published between August 15, 2005 and January 3, 2014. They are consumers' own accounts (allegations) about workers' compensation, disability and leave, and property or liability claims that Sedgwick handled for employers and businesses, and they describe denials, delays and difficulty reaching an adjuster. Eight other posts that name another company first and Sedgwick second are linked as related, not as primary complaints. Posts about other parties whose names contain "Sedgwick" (for example a property-development company and an individual) are not linked.
  • BBB (profile "Sedgwick CMS," Memphis, as displayed on 2026-09-30): not BBB accredited; rating F. BBB gives as reasons "Failure to respond to 151 complaint(s) filed against business" and "335 complaint(s) filed against business that were not resolved." It shows "543 total complaints in the last 3 years" and "158 complaints closed in the last 12 months," and a customer-review average of 1.01 out of 5 from 200 reviews. BBB also notes that the business "generally responds that the Better Business Bureau online complaint resolution system is not the proper forum to respond to allegations in this complaint."
  • ComplaintsBoard (as displayed on 2026-09-30, page updated Jul 08, 2026): 1.4 from 4 reviews and 398 complaints.
  • Trustpilot: the profile on the sedgwick.com domain is titled "Sedgwick UK" with a London address and relates to the UK business, so its figures are not used for the U.S. claims administrator.
  • CFPB: no company named "Sedgwick" was returned by the database's company lookup on 2026-09-30.

Court dockets naming Sedgwick, including two employee class actions

Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. appears in many court dockets. On 2026-09-30 a CourtListener (RECAP) search for case names containing "Sedgwick Claims Management" returned 418 dockets; the most recently filed at that time was filed on August 14, 2026 in the Southern District of Ohio. The listing includes cases where Sedgwick is a defendant brought by individuals (including ERISA benefit claims, insurance-contract and employment-related matters) and at least one case where Sedgwick is the plaintiff. The count does not show who won or how any case ended, and this page does not profile individual plaintiffs' cases.

Two proposed class actions listed below were brought by people connected to Sedgwick as an employer, not by claimants whose claims Sedgwick administers. All descriptions of claims are allegations.

  • Bailey v. Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc., No. 2:24-cv-02749 (W.D. Tenn.), filed October 8, 2024. The court's orders describe an ERISA case by a participant in the Sedgwick Welfare Benefits Plan, Sedgwick's health plan for its employees, challenging a tobacco surcharge. On September 26, 2025 the court granted in part and denied in part Sedgwick's motion to dismiss: it dismissed without prejudice a claim about supplemental and dependent life insurance premiums, and let the tobacco-surcharge claim go forward "only because she has plausibly alleged that Plan materials fail to notify participants that a physician's recommendation will be accommodated," while saying the plaintiff's arguments that the Quit for Life program is not a reasonable alternative standard fail. On June 8, 2026 the court granted a corrected, unopposed motion for preliminary approval of a settlement and preliminarily certified, for settlement purposes, a non-opt-out class of U.S. residents who were Plan participants or beneficiaries from October 8, 2018, paid a tobacco or nicotine surcharge and were not fully reimbursed. The order sets a Final Approval Hearing for October 9, 2026 at 9 a.m. in Memphis, says notice goes by U.S. mail at least 60 days before the hearing and that objections must be filed at least 14 days before it, and states that if the settlement does not become final the order is not an admission by either side. The order does not state the settlement amount. CourtListener lists later filings on August 25, September 9, September 10 and September 29, 2026 whose text was not available there, so the current status is not stated here; check the docket.
  • Khan v. Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. (CourtListener caption: Kahn), No. 1:24-cv-13084 (N.D. Ill.), docket entry 1 dated December 20, 2024. The class action complaint, on behalf of insurance adjusters, representatives, investigators, examiners and related personnel employed by Sedgwick, alleges that "no poach" agreements with Sedgwick's clients restrained employee mobility and wages in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act (15 U.S.C. 1). These are the plaintiff's allegations. CourtListener lists a filing labelled "Dismiss for Failure to State a Claim" on March 4, 2025 and docket entries through August 28, 2026 (an order on a motion to withdraw as attorney), but the text of the orders entered February 3, 2026 and later was not available there, so this page does not state whether the motion was decided or whether the case is open.

To check a specific case, search the court's PACER docket or CourtListener by case number. For a disability denial, the plan's internal appeal generally comes first; the Department of Labor page cited above notes that you normally must complete the plan's claim process before suing and suggests seeking legal advice.

Is Sedgwick Legitimate?

Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. is an incorporated company (BBB lists incorporation on December 22, 1969) based in Memphis, licensed as a third-party administrator in Oregon since September 2017 according to Oregon's 2023 order, and renewing a South Dakota TPA license in 2023 under a consent order; it says it serves 59% of the Fortune 500. Regulators have entered consent orders against it in Oregon (April 2023, consent with a $10,000 penalty, $3,000 suspended) and South Dakota (February 2023, no admission or denial, $2,000), and it has reported data-security incidents to state authorities (events in 2020, 2024 and 2025 described above). The BBB profile is not accredited; BBB, ComplaintsBoard and USAComplaints figures are summarized in the complaint record section. This page assigns Sedgwick no rating of its own, treats complaints as allegations, and reports what the public records above say so readers can weigh it themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who decides my claim: Sedgwick or my employer?

Sedgwick's privacy policy says that "in delivering most of our services Sedgwick and its subsidiaries acts on behalf of an insurer and/or insurance broker" and that the insurer or broker is the controller of the personal data it processes; that passage concerns data and does not say who decides each claim. The responsible party and the appeal route for your claim are set out in your claim or denial letter, the insurance policy or plan document (for an employer benefit plan, the Summary Plan Description) and, for workers' compensation, your state's rules. Appeal procedures and deadlines differ by state and plan type.

How do I check my Sedgwick claim status?

Sedgwick says to register an OmniClaims (mySedgwick) account at www.mysedgwick.com, where claimants can "view information about your existing claim, including claim status and payment history," securely communicate with the claims team, upload files and update contact details. Sedgwick also offers a 24/7/365 chat for U.S. and Canada claimants and a separate live chat for technical help with its portals.

How do I reach my Sedgwick adjuster?

Sedgwick says an adjuster is assigned who "will be your primary contact," and its privacy policy directs claim questions to "your Sedgwick claim or casefile representative." Its Contact page lists chat and "Help with my claim" but no phone number (checked 2026-09-30), so use the number on your own claim paperwork or the portal's secure messaging. The 901-415-7400 number on Sedgwick letterhead is its Memphis corporate office, not described as a claims line. For mySedgwick login problems, Sedgwick lists Technical Support at (866) 647-7610 or (901) 415-7800, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time Monday through Friday, but says claim questions belong in the Communication Center.

How do I appeal a denied disability claim handled by Sedgwick?

For an employer plan covered by ERISA, the Department of Labor page "Filing a Claim for Your Health or Disability Benefits" says a plan must decide a disability claim not later than 45 days after receiving it (with an extension of up to 30 days if the plan notifies you in time), that you have "at least 180 days to file an appeal" (check your plan for a longer period), and that appeals must be decided not later than 45 days after receipt, with up to an additional 45 days if the plan notifies you of special circumstances. The same page says the plan must provide, on request and free of charge, copies of documents, records and other information relevant to the claim, and advises including all information related to your claim in the appeal. Follow the deadlines in your denial letter and plan document, which control, and call EBSA at 1-866-444-3272 or use askebsa.dol.gov for help. Plans not covered by ERISA can follow different rules.

Where can I complain about a workers' compensation or insurance claim Sedgwick handles?

For workers' compensation, the Department of Labor directory at dol.gov/agencies/owcp/wc links to each state's workers' compensation agency. For insurance-type claims, the NAIC directory at content.naic.org/state-insurance-departments links to each state insurance department's complaint page. Oregon and South Dakota insurance regulators have entered consent orders with Sedgwick as a licensed third-party administrator (see the regulator section). Leave-law (FMLA) questions can go to the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division at 1-866-487-9243.

Has Sedgwick been subject to regulator orders or notable court cases?

Oregon's Division of Financial Regulation entered Final Order INS-23-0020 on April 25, 2023 by consent (a $10,000 civil penalty with $3,000 suspended) over total-loss notices on automobile claims from January 2020 to May 2022, and the South Dakota Division of Insurance signed a consent order on February 28, 2023 with a $2,000 penalty, in which Sedgwick "neither admits to nor denies any violations." Business Insurance reported a December 29, 2015 California settlement of about $1.13 million over utilization review, without an admission. Details and California's 2024 audit entries are in the regulator section above. Court dockets include two proposed class actions brought in connection with Sedgwick's role as an employer (Bailey, about its employee health plan's tobacco surcharge, with a Final Approval Hearing set for October 9, 2026; and Khan/Kahn, alleging no-poach agreements); they are described in the court-dockets section and are allegations.

Has Sedgwick reported data breaches?

State records show three notices. A sample notice listed on the California Attorney General's site on 01/12/2021 describes unauthorized access between July 31 and August 2, 2020; Massachusetts filing 2025-907 contains an April 3, 2025 notice about an employee email account accessed on November 14, 2024; and Massachusetts filing 2026-276 contains a Managed Care Advisors/Sedgwick Government Solutions notice to affected World Trade Center Health Program Nationwide Provider Network members. Each involved different people and data, described in the company background section. If you received a letter, use the enrollment instructions in it.

What do BBB and ComplaintsBoard show for Sedgwick?

BBB lists "Sedgwick CMS" in Memphis as not accredited, and ComplaintsBoard has a profile named "Sedgwick Claims Management Services"; the figures shown on 2026-09-30 are in the complaint record section above and are not added together. Trustpilot's profile for the sedgwick.com domain is titled "Sedgwick UK" and relates to the UK business. Complaints on any of these sites are allegations and the platforms do not verify them.

Are all USAComplaints posts with "Sedgwick" in the name about this company?

The posts linked here are those whose offender field names Sedgwick CMS or a spelling variant; posts about other parties that happen to include "Sedgwick" in their name, such as a property-development company and an individual, are not linked to this profile. Eight further posts name another company first and Sedgwick second and are linked as related rather than primary.
