Broke down with a bad starter and not knowing anything about the area the tow truck took me to Rose Tire and Service.
Communication was poor or non-existent and time to fix was poor. Found out after repair that the first replacement starter was bad. The labor rate was reasonable costing $64.27 however the total of $459.06 was far from reasonable.
Reviews from local folks say they are good and fair, maybe it was my out of state plates that entitled me to different treatment. $355.92 for a starter I can get off the Internet (including shipping) for $90.00 or locally and in stock for $160.00. I checked with the supplier they used (which is the same chain I would have used locally) and as far as we can tell they based their sale price on the most expensive starter the chain carries and then marked it up about 75% above their cost.
I had no facts regarding prices and such when I checked out, just past experience. To say I felt I was being taken would be an understatement. To make matters worst, I told them I wanted the old starter back (figured I would rebuild it and have a spare), that was fine with them but they were going to charge me a core charge on top of that outrageous markup!
I didn't pay the extra money for the old part, I paid the bill and got as far away from them as fast as I could before stopping for a late lunch in a town way down the highway. Funny how one business can make you endeavor to avoid an entire town in the future!
