I had a relative buy a car from Neil's and for the first month or two it was fine. So when I needed a car in late summer I went to Neil's too as my divorce left my credit in a not so good state. After I got my car, my relative's car died on the side of the road. I won't get into her car woes.
I had my mini-van for a day or two past the 30 day mark when the sliding door of the van fell off. That is right, it FELL OFF! I had to drive the van to a local mechanic to get it put back on. That cost me $100 to fix. Then I had a tire blow. Come to find out, all 4 tires were bald!!! So I had to get new tires all the way around to the tune of $300 (with a discount from a friend at the tire place). The transmission had been slipping. I'd been putting transmission fluid in it to replace what was leaking somewhere (though not on the ground as I never left a puddle). When I had the van for 10 months, the transmission went completely out and threw a rod.
I was stranded on the side of the road and had to have it towed to a local transmission repair shop. They told me I'd need a new one. I called a mechanic friend from the St. Joseph are who drove to KC, picked up the van and towed it to his shop. He found a rebuilt transmission for me. I paid half of the cost of the trany to him. I ended up getting behind to Neil's on my payments. They offered to take the van back and let me out of the loan. I said great, let me go clean out my belongings and I'll give you the location of the van. I drove that evening to St. Joseph to clean out the van and called the very next morning to give them the address of the shop.
They told me they'd fax the paperwork releasing me from any financial obligation when I gave them the address of the shop the van was at. They never sent me anything. After many phone calls, they told me that they weren't letting me out of the loan and I was responsible for the balance. I refused to pay it.
The week of Christmas I was served papers for court. Neil's/Regency was suing me for the balance of the loan. I called the court house to get a continuance as I was served 4 days before the court date. I had no way of getting to court. I was told by the court that I couldn't get a continuance because they were all on a holiday vacation and wouldn't be back until my day in court.
Needless to say, I lost due to default. My wages were then garnished. I can say it took their lawyers (who are in house) a long time to figure out who I worked for because they couldn't understand how my company works. It was funny! But I paid over $6000 in garnishments.
Lesson learned: NEVER EVER buy a car from Neil's.
His commercials are ridiculous. He pimps out his daughter on the commercials. He had her on those commercials when she was a little kid wearing make up like adults do. That man is a predator!!!
