My vehicle (which is a 1981 Chrysler New Yorker) would not start. Since Pepboys was within a block, I made the mistake of thinking they could take care of fixing this simple problem.
The vehicle has only 52,000 actual miles even though it is 24 years old. So I have the vehicle towed (by pepboys) to their shop ($60 one block) and their service manager advises me I need a computer diagnostic (77.00).
When they contact me, they inform me, I need to replace timing belt, complete tune-up, replace wiring, distributor, rotor for a mere $622.00- and then he says" we'll finish the dianostic to see what is wrong. Boy do I feel (Pick your own word)%.!!! I ask for a day to decide-knowing now that I made a big mistake.
After having talked to three mechanics (one an ASE certified mechanic). He stated first, their is "No machine" that can run diagnostic on a 1981 chrysler. 2 If you have a broken timing belt (which would not normally happen at 52,000 miles) they wouldn't be able to measure compression (which was another item pepboys discussed).
I am still in the process of having the real problem resolved, which at this point is most likely a fuel filter or fuel pump, but having found this site, I felt I should do my part to tell everyone to be very carefull about using "Pepboys" as an auto repair shop.
I basically gave $200 away, just for attempting to use them. Best I can determine they did not want to work on a "24" year old car which is older than most of the mechanic's on their staff (by appearance).
