John's Transmission Service
Bad Business at John's Transmissions, ripoff

I own a 1988 Nissan V-6 Pickup w / 2-Wheel Drive. It has been a great truck! Last year, the radiator temp. Came up to the max reading, but never got out of the scale. I ended up replacing the radiator. This heating problem caused the transmission to start "slipping".

I took the truck to John's Transmission Service, 309 M.L. King Drive, Bryan, TX. 979-779-9696. John said he could rebuild the transmission and offer a 12 month full warranty. He estimated the cost to be $800.00.

Two weeks later, the truck was ready. John said it would have been sooner but he had to install the second torque converter, as the first one was very noisy. The cost had escalated from $800 to $928. This was my first clue that the fun was about to begin.

I drove the truck home, I noticed a mettallic noise coming from the vehicle that had not been there for 13 years. I took the truck back to John's (a 70-mile drive) where he told me it was an exhaust leak. I went to another shop and was told there was no exhaust leak. I took the truck back to John's (another 70-mile drive) and left it. He replaced the header donut gaskets and the noise was eliminated.

Two months later, the truck began to have violent vibrations coming from the transmission area. I had another shop examine the vehicle. I was told that the torque converter was bad. I called John and talked for about 30 minutes where he recanted all sorts of reasons for the problem. I took the truck back to his shop (a total trip of 140 miles-had to take 2 vehicles). He pulled the transmission and replaced the defective torque converter for the third time.

A month later, the exact same problem reoccurred. Again. I went to a third-party shop for an examination. Bad torque converter. I took the truck back to John's, where he put the 4th torque converter in the truck.

I drove the truck for two weeks, this time, and the same vibrations began. I called John and explained to him that he was clearly incompetent and an idiot. It seems like you would learn after the second failure, if you had any sense at all. I learned that he was using Daco (?) rebuilt torque converters. Probably rebuilt in America, as cheaply as possible. I have had the same experience with rebuilt (in America) alternators. I told John that he was going to either install a new Nissan Torque converter which would cost $1100, or he would refund my money. He elected to refund my money, but I had to drive another 140 miles to get it.

The moral of the story is do not use John's Transmission Service in Bryan, Texas. They do not know what they are doing. You people need to know that you are protected from this type of fraud by the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Do not take any crap from these kind of repair con-artists.
