Merrick Bank Credit CardsComplaints:
I was on credit councelling with Lighthouse Credit when Merrick Purchased my Nextcard account. Lighthouse bungled up my accounts and wasn't paying my accounts on time, but that's another story. So I dumped them.
Merrick in the mean time started squawking about not recieving payments. When I recieved my report from Lighthouse they returned a payment and in doing that they started to charge late charges, eating up all the payments (8) made to them and Nextcard. So my balance never went down. Now after I dumped credit counceling, I asked Merrick to make my account active, which
they did, and charged a $20 reinstatement fee. That was OK, until they, without notice and for no reason closed the account. I called wanting to know why. They said because I was with Lighthouse. Which I pointed out was
closed 6 months prior. Then they said it never should have been re-opened.
Then I said I wanted the money back of course they refused. It looks like that's yet ANOTHER way to cheat people. Needless to say the missing money issue has not resolved either. So I stated that due to their
unethical business practices that I will probably just NOT pay them another cent. Their retort was—we will make a bad report on your credit.
I said big deal you already did that with bogus claims that I was late on my payments. I know because i checked my advice is to simply start sending their bills back to them. If they call hang up in their face after all we made the contract with nextcard not them. It's funny that when I said that to them on the phone, they got
real quiet. I think that it's possible they don't have a leg to stand on and they know it.
JULY REPORT UPDATE
Lighthouse Credit contacted them on 7/7/03 According to them all payments were posted. Merrick out and out lied to Ligthouse. This morning 7/8 they claimed they recieved no calls and they aren't going to make good on the payments they stole.
If you are a Nextcard customer DO NOT PAY THEM ONE MORE CENT. Again they have no written contact with us and have no legal leg to stand on to collect.
