In I had a NextCard secured card to build credit. Merrick purchased the account in July when NextCard went bankrupt. Merrick asked me, via e-mail, if I wanted a credit card with them. The card was to be unsecured. I asked them to send me, via postal service, information and terms about the company. I never received the information.
What I did receive was a bill with late and over-limit fees added. I called Merrick and was assured the fees would be remove. I asked about the high balance, over $200.
According to my records, my balance with NextCard was about $42, after the security deposit was applied. They asked if I wanted the security deposit applied to the balance. I said I did. I sent the $42 payment to Merrick.
The next bill from Merrick had another late and over-limit charge added and the balance was almost $300 now. Needless to say, I told the to cancel my account, apply the security deposit, and send me a pay off statement.
Until they "charged off" in Oct of I received late payment fees, finance/monthly charges and over limit fees totaling over $800. What I didn't receive was proof of the original purchased balance nor was my deposit applied. They are damaging my credit report. Contacts from my lawyer yielded very little information, none was useful.
I received a call from a company recently and they said the Merrick account was going into default judgment. They were authorized to make other arrangements to forestall the judgment. They talked as if they were a law firm. I told them they could talk to MY lawyer. My lawyer contacted the company. She said it was a collections agency, I should file a report with the Attorney General. I have.
I just want this mess GONE! It fells good to know I am not alone in this!
