I am another former NextCard customer that Merrick Bank is trying to screw. When I received the letter from Merrick advising that they were taking over my NextCard account, I nearly hit the roof! They wanted to charge me $120.00 yearly fee and 29.9 percent interest. I immediately contacted NextCard to find out what I had to do to avoid all dealings with these obvious crooks. I closed my account and made payments and and balance transfers to pay off my balance in full before the September 20 deadline. There was a problem with the processing of one of my balance transfers and the final payment was inadvertently made twice. I contacted the credit card handling the transfer to let them know and they stopped payment on their check because I had already taken care of it.
I have now received a letter from Merrick advising that I owe a $30.00 returned check fee on a check that I didn't write on an account that has already been paid in full. I contacted them and explained the situation to both a regular customer service person and a supervisor, to no avail. I also contacted the credit card company who made the error and they are writing to Merrick Bank as well. I have made a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and am posting here to let people know not to deal with Merrick Bank.
They are complete slimeballs and I hope they rot in hell for their lousy business practices. Should the steps I have already taken not resolve this issue, my next step will be to hire an attorney and I hope that all others who have been screwed by these loan sharks will do the same.
