Unfair late charges, lying and deceitful reps ripoff

My wife and I got involved with Cross Country Bank about 3 years ago. Our credit was bad and we saw this as a way of hopefully reestablishing our credit.

We received two offers from Cross Country, one in my name and one in my wife's name. We sent in both applications and both received our cards about two weeks later. I beleive each card had a $300 hundred dollar limit.

The problems began almost immediatly. We would send in our payments (usually about 2 weeks before they where due), but every bill that we received showed late charges. When we called to ask about them, the reps that we spoke to where extremly rude and unhelpful. The told us that once the charges where in place that there was nothing that they could do about them. I when ahead and payed them for the first couple of months.

When we saw that it was starting to get out of hand, we cut up the cards, called the company, and asked for our accounts to be closed. The reps told us that we had to send in our request in writing and that the accounts would remain open until they received our request in the mail. We sent in two requests, one for my account and one for my wifes, two months later we were still getting bills with new late charges.

After sending several payments (some of which were NEVER applied to our accounts) we stopped sending them money.
3 years later we have had several letters and phone calls from them offering to "settle" for a portion of the money that they say that we "owe" them.

Just last week my wife received a summons to appear in court. Apparently our so called "delinquent" account was sold to a third party collection company who is now suing us for the balance on her account plus court costs. I assume that my account will soon follow although I havn't heard of anything yet.

To anyone even THINKING about using this company, DON'T! They are complete scam artists and will ruin your credit and your life.
