Ad refurbished terminal and techs

Our point of purchase terminal was replaced after 15 years of use, (having used it about 10 times a month.) They replaced it 2 months ago after being on the phone with techs giving me prompts for hours. It was replaced with a refurbished one that now suddenly doesn't work. I was on the phone for hours again today before "I" had to suggest to a supervisor "Nick" that maybe it was the terminal that was not working? Maybe they paid for a cheap refurbished one? Would this become a pattern every two months? He said I would have to wait 3 days to get a new one, and that I couldn't put through any charges until then unless I paid more for a new one, or subscribed to "dialup", both costing more, it could happen again. He conferenced with "Kirk" in Merchant Services, then I heard them rudely commenting about me to each other before I hung up. Is this the new "bad "service from amex we are in for from now on?
