Be very careful when interacting with Sallie Mae.
The following is true in my experience:
1. Different representatives will tell you different things.
2. Although when faxing a forbearnce or deferrment request it at times states that it will be processed within 24 hours (and it says this right on the sheet!), Sallie Mae will claim that it might take up to two weeks or more!
3. If you give them your phone number they will call and harass you multiple times a day via an automated recording EVEN IF YOU ARE ALREADY CALLING THEM TWICE A DAY TO CHECK ON YOUR DEFERRMENT APPLICATION STATUS.
4. The representatives can be insulting. One called me a jerk because I told her I did not think it was right for their automated system to call me at 8:00am in the morning FOR NOTHING when I had just called in less than 12 hours ago. I called back and NOTHING CHANGED ON MY ACCOUNT. She said I was being a jerk because I was upset that I called in for no reason. Why call someone 12 hours later if nothing changed on the account and they just called you four times the day before... Other than just to HARASS PEOPLE?
5. Even if you have gone over everything less than 15 minutes ago, each call is like groundhogs day. You must explain everything all over again to the next rep and go through it all again as they read their script.
6. You CANNOT trust the advice of the representatives. As I said each will say different things. One would tell me that i am eligible for one thing, the other would tell me that I am not.
7. To make a payment via phone (which is supposedly credited right away — if what they say is true — unfortunately you never know!) it costs $15. $15 to make a payment!!!
8. For the deferrments while they allow you to apply online, they still for certain ones want you to fax in proof of income and such things. Now when you send a fax, they easily can DELAY when they claimed to have recieved it if they will admit to recieving it at all. THIS IS FRAUD! Any fax sent ought to be acknowledged reciept within 24 hours! You have NO WAY OF KNOWING WheTheR Or not they RECiEVED YOUR PAPERWORK! They can delay or deny as you have no proof. You almost need a lawyer to interact with th4em on your behalf.
I HIGHLY reccomend AVOIDING any loans with sallie mae or any affiliated companies. I also encourage the government to investigate their business practices.
