My husband and I purchased a manufactured home financed with Green Tree/Conseco in 1999. We did not realize that Conseco handled mostly "high risk" loans or we would have went elsewhere. Similar to many of the stories I have read here, we also have been treated very rudely by Conseco representatives and also have a hard time understanding anyone in the "Customer Service" department. We always paid our payment on time, never late. I did notice that most of our payment was going to interest, some months the whole payment would. When I called to ask about this I would be transfered repeatedly until finally I would be disconnected.
In September my 14 year old son died from meningitis. He died on the 8th, our payment was due on the 15th. Needless to say, we were both devasted and in no condition to worry about any of our bills, much less Conseco. All of our bills were late that month, Conseco received their payment on October 14, which consisted of September and October payment. I received so many rude phone calls from them at all hours of the day, even on Sunday! I had called and informed them that my son had died and I was sorry that the payment was late but that it was on the way. The representative I spoke to said that unless I Western Unioned a payment that day, (October 14) my house would be foreclosed on. I told him I had sent a payment and that it should have been there by now. He told me they had already gotten the mail that day and it was not in there. He also implied that I was lying about the death of my son and told me I needed to fax him a copy of the death certificate, which I did.
To make a long story short, I called my bank and found out that the check had posted to my account on that very day, October 14, which means Conseco had to have gotten it on the 11 or 12, maybe sooner. I now mail all my payments certified mail so that I have proof as to when they are received. I am so glad this company is in trouble. I hope whoever takes them over has the human qualities it takes to be in customer service. I have read that they are in trouble because they have so many repo's. I wonder how many of you would have stayed in your home if they only would have worked with you. How much money do they get for a vacant home no one is paying on?
Our home is up for sale, and we will never deal with Conseco again. We also tell everyone we know not to deal with them. I really felt sorry for the employees at Enron and World Com knowing that many would lose their jobs, I have a real hard time feeling sorry for any employee at Conseco who will no longer have a job. I am sure there are some good people who work there, I just never encountered any.
