Home Equity Line of Credit blocked online access, refused to provide written notices of rate changes as required

I agree with Mark in Chicago — if you ever get behind at NFCU, even for a short while, they will harass you day and night.

I learned from this experience when our home and rental property were destroyed by hurricane in Florida, and I contacted NFCU as I was worried my emergency savings would not last if the insurance company did not assess and pay out promptly. I was right — my savings were exhausted before the insurance was settled and I could not afford to make any more payments. My husband was forward deployed in Iraq but they didn't care. We had excellent credit before this incident. Navy Fed refused me a temporary line of credit to complete the repairs so I could get the home sold (the Marines helped us out) and tried to escalate our deed and foreclose on the home. They told me that the refused the temporary line of credit because I had demonstrated I had "no ability to pay", even though I had over $150K equity in the home. That's what over 12 years of having a positive track record, no missed payments and good credit will get you with NFCU the first time you get into trouble.

When we closed on our second home, NFCU harrassed the family that was buying our home. They closed on their home, and then went to NFCU to deposit their proceeds check drawn on their attorney's trust account. The teller humiliated them and demanded to know how "they" could have gotten so much money and in front of many waiting customers, said she had to contact a manager "to check this out". They phoned me from the credit union, crying, because they didn't think they were going to come to closing with the proceeds that they needed to settle the transaction. Our attorney contacted NFCU and after some strong words, their funds were released... But without an apology.

Believe me, this is just the tip of the iceberg, since my relationship with NFCU deterioriated after that.in spite of paying our bills, and having good jobs, NFCU continues to treat us like "deadbeats" and are rude. When we sold our car they even tried to place a hold on our proceeds check and prevent us from transferring our money to another bank. Our debts were up to date, but we had to call the NCUA oversight agency to have our money released to us. They will try and get away with anything, and are beyond arrogant. Once we sell our house, we will be rid of NFCU for good!

Most recently, Navy Fed suddenly stop allowing me online access to my account. Unlike Mike, we were not "behind" and our loans were current. Our secure loan was even pre-paid and almost paid off (8 years early). NFCU refused to tell me why my online access was blocked, and did not provide me written statements about my loans either (as required). For two months, a message stated, "rate change pending", and it was impossible to make payments.

We are in the process of retaining an attorney who specializes in the fair credit and mortgage law; and are considering seeking other NFCU "shareholders" to file a class action suit for violation of our rights under FCRA.

Google NFCU and court proceedings and you will see that there are several other cases pending against them.in Maryland, a lady was able to get a judgment against NFCU for her legal costs and a $10,000 punitive award. She owed NFCU money, but filed for bankruptcy and notified NFCU she had legal counsel. NFCU still continued to harass her, even showing up at her house.
The court awarded this lady damages for NFCU's gross disregard for her rights under bankruptcy laws.

I highly advise anyone who has been treated poorly and harassed by NFCU to go to the NACA website... Http://www.naca.net... They have good information and a list of referrals to attorneys based on area of specialty and level of expertise.

I am sick and tired of being threatened by NFCU. I hope that "they" have all their ducks in a row and have not done ANYTHING that isn't in COMPLETE compliance with *ALL* aspects of fair credit reporting and associated acts... Since they don't feel they have to "work" with anyone...

We now tell all new military arrivals at indoc briefings... STAY AWAY FROM NFCU! If you have accounts there, CLOSE THEM!!!

It's usually a good opportunity for someone to give a first hand horror story about their negative experiences from NFCU.

Go to USAA instead... Where you'll be treated like a real human being without the arrogance!

PS: We have had NO PROBLEMS with our other banks, loans, credit cards or accounts... Just NFCU! At one time, back 92 - 98 they were great! Now, in my opinion, they are the Lucifers of banking. Bigger is not "better", and somewhere along the way they lost their soul.
