My husband opened an account at BB&T around December. We encountered our first problem with the bank around. January or February. My husband set up overdraft protection when the account was opened. There was only supposed to be 1 deduction from the checking account to the savings account per month.
They ended up taking 2 deductions in the month. That plus the purchases we made put the account in the negative. When we went to get it straightened out the representative was very rude and basically said it was our fault for going over and not paying attention. The money was supposed to be taken from the savings in the event of ann overdraft. And what we spent would have been covered.
Not only did they not set up the overdarft on the account but they charged in advance for the pending charges. We had to go to another bank to get someone to look at the account. All the money was refunded then.
Recently, We've made purchases that should have been covered by the money that was in our account. The only thing that would have caused an overdraft would have been a $20.00 purchase which would bring the account negative only $8.75. They charged us $280.00 in overdraft fees for all of the small purchases that were made. We only deserved 1 of those overdraft fees.
I did the math and took it to the bank with my husband to show them the error. They told me that the other charges were because money was pending on the account. Pending transactions have nothing to do with anything because all of the charges are cleared by now. Even with the pending charges the account still would have only been negative $8.75.
The overdraft should have only been charged to the most recently cleared transaction. We cannot afford to give away our hard earned money. We have a baby on the way and my husband was just laid off. Shame on BB&T for stealing money from people in need at a time where the economy is in such bad shape. It's bad either way but they are already making the big bucks.
