My husband and I recently applied for a loan only to discover that our credit score was much lower than we expected. We have flawless credit, yet our credit score was mediocre. When looking at our credit report more closely, we discovered that there were 3 Capital One accounts on my husband's credit report and 2 on my credit report that we never opened! And to make matters worse, the accounts were charge offs! The accounts had various balance levels, were opened various times, and were all negatively reported. One was an account for $4 which they listed as a charge-off—regardless of the amount, the charge-off kills your credit. It appears that Capital One opens accounts in people's names, leaves them on the records for a while and then charges them off to destroy people's credit. Since they prey off of people who have less than perfect credit by offering them high interest credit cards with minimal credit lines, this fraudulent practice keeps them in business. I tried to handle this Capital One; however, I got nowhere. I called 5 times one day and was told that the system was updating, the people I needed to talk to were not available, or my problem could not be handled over the phone. I was given a PO Box address that had no phone number. And, not surprisingly, of the numerous creditors listed on our credit reports, Capital One was the ONLY one that did not have a phone number to call for disputes. I did manage to get someone to look up our socials and there was no record of us having a Capital One account. Yet, on our credit report, we had nearly $10,000 worth of charged-off debt to Capital One. At the time of writing this post, I have been on hold for 37 minutes waiting for someone "To help me". I anticipate that I will be here this time tomorrow if I continue to wait. Most people do not routinely check their credit reports—which we didn't either. So this may a bigger problem than people realize. It is important for everyone to check their report to make sure you too are not a victim of Capital One fraud. I hope that this information will help someone else avoid the headaches we have endured regarding this type of issue.in the age of computers, you must be aware of what people are doing to you without your knowledge.
