I was a first time home buyer, single working mother trying to provide a decent home for me and my 2 year old son. I was rushed into signing papers, and not real sure about what I was getting into. But I was excited about the fact of owning my own home, so I went along and just passed it off as being a "worry wart".
About 1 month into the loan is when the problems started.
The 1st problem was the refridgerator stopped cooling and the toilet in the smaller bathroom kept overflowing. These problems handled fairly quick (within 30 days) I called the repair folks and paid for the service upfront, then Conseco reimbursed me. About 3 months later I discovered that the air conditioning was not working. I called a repairman out to fix this and was SHOCKED when he explained that the central air unit was never connected. Not only this, but it was not repairable because it was alomst 30 YEARS OLD!
I immediantly contacted Conseco, and was told that I should have brought that to their attention when the mobile home was purchased, not 4 months later. Well, excuse me, it was November when I made the purchase, and since the contract said there was a central air unit included, I just assumed I had AC!!!
They told me to get estimates and we would "work something out". I obtained 3 estimates that ranged from $2,500 - $1,700. Conseco agreed to pay $700 after I went round and round with several representatives from the company. I was not satisfied with this, but what else could I do? Then I find out that they are going to credit this to the account rather than cut a check to me or the repairman! So now I was out $1,700.00... But hey, at least I was cool. Lol.
Next is when the harrasment started. I had fallen a month behind on my payment (could it be because I just shelled out $1,700?) and they called me on a daily basis. Then I find out that everyday my payment was late I was being charged $9.52 DAILY! I would have never known this, because it isn't on the statement, it is tacked onto the end of the loan, but one of their representatives was kind enough to relay this information to me.
Finally, I got caught up on the payments, and decided to move the mobile home onto a piece of land I had purchased. Conseco offered to assist me with this endevor. They agreed to pay for the expense of moving the home, and just at that into the balance of my loan. Cool, that would certainly help since it was going to cost $2,300. After about a month of phone tag/voice mails. I was told that it waould increase my payment by xxx amount to go ahead and have the movers get started. Conseco contacted the mobile home movers and assured them that they would have their check within 10 days. Well, the gentleman was skeptical about this and said that he could not move it until he had the check in his hands. Great, another 10 days to wait... Well, after 12 days, the mover contacted me and stated that the person with whom we had been dealing with at Conseco was no longer employeed there, and they had no record of this transaction! I immediantly called Conseco and was treated like nothing short of gum stuck to the bottom of a shoe... I explained that I had already terminated my lease, and made arrangements for utilities to be shut off, because they had assured me as well as the movers the check would arrive in 10 days. I certainly couldn't come up with $2,300 anytime soon. I was told "maybe you should try the Red Cross, they help families in need. I WAS OUTRAGED!!! How could they be so heartless. I was not a homeless person looking for a handout, I was a full-time working single parent who had been lied to!!!
I eventually managed to come up with the money to move the mobile home (a month later) and have since fell behind in the payments again. They have once again started their nasty, rude harrasing phone calls. I want out of this loan, but since I have been late on payments, I can not get it refinanced with a legitimate financial institution. I will grin and bear it and do the best I can, but it hardly seems fair.
