Asurion Cell Phone Insurance is a ripoff Expensive and Worthless

I tried to file a claim with Asurion today. I have Verizon as my carrier and I pay $5.99 a month for insurance that is supposed to cover everything.

I dropped my phone the day after New Years. It seemed to work fine most of the time but I figured I could live with it because I am due for an upgrade at the end of March.

The phone got to the point that it barely takes calls anymore. Sometimes the other person I call cannot hear a word I say.

I called Verizon and they told me to file a claim with Asurion, their third party insurance company.

Long story short they denied the claim becuase I waited longer than 60 days past the incident to file the claim. I guess I could have lied and said it happend yesterday but I told the truth and was punished for it. I did not feel it was necessary to replace the phone earlier because whilst it was scratched it still worked.

I have had this insurance on my Verizon phone for seven years now and I previously filed a claim. Five years ago I lost my Startac while on vacation.

The replacement phone had an issue with the display so I ended up sending it back. That phone had an issue as well so back it went.

Turns out that the phones they send out as replacement are refurbished. Folks, if I wanted a reburbished or used phone I'd just get one from Ebay for $50 and save the $6 per month that Asurion charges me.

My ex wife's phone on the same plan died prematurely and I found the exact same phone on Craigslist for $35.

The point is stay away from this company at all costs. Take your $5.99 and put it into a savings account each month. You will have money to buy another phone from Ebay or wherever plus it will draw interest.
