I applied for 2 Capital One Cards in 2000. I received one that was secured for $49 at a $200 credit limit and a second for no fee at a $200 limit. After approx 4-6 months, with a balance of approx. $179, and faithful monthly payments, I developed some health problems and missed a due date. I was charged a $25 late fee, (which in itself brought me over the limit) and the following month I was charged an over-the-limit fee of $25. That was the start of the spiral downward... It seemed no matter when I sent the payment, it was never "on time", making it impossible to paydown my credit balance, I was getting additional late fees that were added to my already over-the-limit fees... Making it impossible financially to pay down the balance below the $200 credit limit (what customer on Earth would want to sit and calculate dates, add'l fees, when creditors received payments, late fees and prior payments made. Not matter what the calculation, YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO BE RIGHT IN THEIR EYES!) At this point I was so frustrated I called and complained about the fees and asked if they would allow me to combine the two accounts into one, they said no, there excuse being that one was secured, the other wasn't. (This provided a sneaky opportunity for them to charge unreasonable fees, ironically making having the credit card (s) a hassle rather than a benefit. I was so caught up with trying to pay down the debt that their business practices were emotionally getting to me... As I was trying to clear up my credit, not make it worse! In the end I borrowed money from family to pay the cards off, and on one still received a $3.42 charge after payment in full! I made sure I paid it on time, and couldn't believe it when they sent me another statement with a $25 late fee charge... However, they finally reconciled with me in Jan. Of this year, but not without a lot of intimidation and runaround. If you are thinking of applying for a CapitalOne Card, I urge you not to... It is more hassle than what it is worth!
