A company calling themselves "Grants Association" called me and said they were a government grants office and that 20,000 names were given to them for government grant eligibility and that my name was on the list for a $5000.00 grant. I have been searching for grants recently and assumed that my name came up due to this fact.
So, I gave them the information they asked for (which was my fault). They asked me for my banking information so that they could deposit my grant there once I was approved and to verify that I was, indeed, who I said I was. I was a little leary when talking to them and asked them all the appropriate questions... Address, phone, website, who I was talking to, and how I can be sure that they weren't trying to take my money. They assured me that they could not get access to my account without my written agreement.
After the call, I tried to get on their website, but of course, it did not exist. I tried to call them back, but only got a recording and when I tried to leave a message, the mailbox was full. After researching on the internet about this company, I found one site that said the company was a ripoff.
I now need to figure out how to stop them from using my account information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not usually give up that information on the phone to anyone, but this seemed very legitimate to me. I guess I learned a very big lesson.
