Buyers beware. Allstate Insurance has stooped to the "lowest of the low" of sales gimmicks, and buyers need to be aware.
While shopping for insurance for a new vehicle, I checked a dozen major brand insurance companies, and Allstate provided a great price for the applicable coverage. So I went through the online process and paid the 6-month premium up front, directly from my bank, as an instant payment. (Note: I did this 12 days in advance of the policy becoming active.) Three days before the policy was to go into effect, I received a letter stating they needed renewal documents from my current insurance company, a copy of my current policy, proof of home ownership, and a copy of my current personal injury coverage. I had 7 days, and this would not guarantee that my original quote would apply.
In 30 years of driving, I have been covered by 2 insurance companies and have had NO lapses of coverage.
After getting the runaround from Allstate's "Customer Info Center" (800-787-0600), I contacted a supervisor and requested that they cancel my policy and refund my prior payment. The answer was, "Well, it will be mailed out and you should see it in 7-10 days," which is another violation of Minnesota insurance regulations.
After I contacted the State of Minnesota Attorney General's office, they agreed that this is "bait and switch" and said that the AG's office has dozens of similar complaints, all about Allstate.
I hope no one else falls for this unscrupulous sales tactic.
