In December I went to Allstate to get a quote on my homeowners insurance policy. The agent took all my information and called me the following day with the annual cost to buy the policy. I have been a State Farm customer since past three years, and State Farm's policy was still cheaper than what Allstate was quoting me. I told the agent that I don't want to buy the policy. A few months later I get a bill of $42 from Allstate for homeowners policy.
Upon calling them and explaining that I don't have any policy with them and I don't want any new policy with them, the customer service rep. Told me that he will take care of the issue and I should not worry about the bill. The next month in Feb. I get the same bill again and I follow the same procedure and got the same response back.
The third time I get a notice from collection agency asking for $42.00. I was furious at that point. My credit score is in north of 800 and I don't want it to get dinged. I call Allstate again and I was told to fax a copy of "proof of insurance" from State Farm and once they got that they would remove my name.
I don't understand why I needed to do that but without rguing over the phone I agreed to fax them a copy of "proof of insurance". The fax number they gave me was busy for 2 days so I called again asking them for their mailing address so I can mail the "proof of insurance". Surprisingly, I was told that I can't mail it and the only way is to fax it. I told them that I have been trying since last 2 days to fax it and their fax number is not working. The agent told me that there is no other way other than faxing.
I responded to the collection letter by sending them the copy of "proof of insurance" and asked them not to contact me again regarding the debt. Allstate not only activated my policy without my permission but they are not even willing to fix their error. They keep giving false fax numbers and are not willing to give mailing address.
This is crazy.
