BB&T Bank
Account Closed Without Approval After Merger, Then Overdrafts

I have had several problems with this bank ever since they bought out my original bank, F&M Bank. I had a checking account with about 200 dollars in it at the time of the merger/buyout. BB&T decided to go ahead and close the account about a month after the merger, without my approval or any notification.

When I called and asked why it was closed, they said it was an inactive account. My response was: if it has money in it, how can it be inactive? And besides that, how can you close an account with money in it without my approval, which I did not give? So they reopened my account and graciously agreed to waive the associated fees. What I should have done was get a check for the money, leave and open a new account at a new bank.

I didn't have any problems with them until about a year later, when all of a sudden my account balance went from plus 300 to negative 246 dollars in the course of two days. This was not by my doing. When I tried to investigate, the "representative" at the branch told me that these were legitimate charges against the account. I debated this but was unable to get them to change it.

Well, my problem is this: if you know the account is going into the red, how can you keep allowing withdrawals from the same account? These overdrafts were all done through my ATM/check card, so there would easily have been real-time validation against my available balance. Theoretically, you can't withdraw more money than you have in the account, if I remember correctly. Yet they allowed the charges to go through. And to top it all off, they charged me overdraft fees too.

Now the fun begins. They closed the account for overdraft and sent me a letter telling me that I have to pay the money to them or else they will take action against my credit rating. The letter has no phone number or any contact information for you to discuss the matter with someone. It is just a letter telling you to pay or else, in nice business terminology.

Wonderful bank.
