This past week I was given a check by my friend to cash at his bank, BB&T. I have done this for almost 3 years. He would issue me a check for buying family groceries or whatever. In the beginning he would just make it out for cash and it would be cashed. Then the teller told me I had to get him to make it out to me. This was no problem. I informed my friend and this was done.
Each time I went to this bank, I would give them my driver's license and the check would be cashed, no questions asked. Last week on Thursday, May 4, I went to the drive-in window and proceeded to cash a check that was given to me that morning. The check was made out to me, as had been done since I was instructed. This time I was told there would be a $5 fee since I had no account with that bank.
This I do not understand. How can they charge for cashing a check when the person writing the check has an account there? I informed my friend of this.
He called the bank for an explanation. He told them HE had an account and could not understand why they are charging for checks he may write to others to cash. No real explanation was given, other than bank personnel kept repeating that I had no account there.
I could understand this if neither one of us had an account there, but to charge for withdrawing your monies from your account seems to me just a money maker. Guess in the future I will use my friend's check card! I wonder when they are going to start charging for this, since I have no account with them.
Sounds to me like BB&T is double dipping.
By the way, my friend is changing banks. He has banked with them for 15-18 years.
If I were rating this bank as you would a movie, I would give it 2 thumbs down.
