Petco and its San Diego, CA based corporate office are terrible! I am a Petco employee. I love the work that I do, but I hate the company and its ways. I work in grooming, and we have no air conditioning in the salon. Many of our customers are nervous and sometimes afraid to leave their senior pets in our grooming salon due to the heat. Many of our customers have called corporate to complain, and corporate says they knew nothing of this. Our cage dry area has lots of black mold growing behind the kennels. Our washing machine drains into a closet and then spills out onto the floor, along with the drainage from our tubs.
Petco has a really bad rat problem. We dump countless bags of dog and cat food in the dumpster because the rats tear into the bags. In the grooming shop I work in, we are pressured at least 3-4 times per week to sell extra services. This means an add-on package of $15, $19, or $20 added to the regular groom price; pets would get tooth brushing, better shampoo, a conditioner, etc. The problem is that at least 2 weeks out of every month we do not have the supplies we need for these add-on packages.
As of right now we have no conditioner, and we are out of most of our special shampoos (flea, oatmeal, milk bath, whitening, de-mat, cream rinse). We charge extra for all these products and we do not even have them. This is not good. We have no disinfectant 70% of the time and no laundry soap 90% of the time. The broom that we sweep with every day and the mop we mop with, I paid for out of my own pocket. I have also paid for lots of laundry soap and Pine-Sol as well as bleach. Petco will not provide it most of the time, but we need this stuff.
We work on commission, and Petco gets 50%. I do not think they should. We come out of pocket far too often. We do it for our dogs, not for Petco, but they take advantage of us. Write-ups are given like crazy. We in grooming feel like targets for write-ups, but I can say it is a store-wide problem. I often wonder where they get off. There are so many problems management-wise and corporate-wise that it is not funny. Our break room is really nasty, with tons of flies and gnats and dishes all over.
I could go on and on about Petco and its problems. I do not know all the labor laws, but I do know many laws have been and continue to be broken. I wish there was some way for the animals to really come first and for Petco to stand by its slogan. I love grooming dogs, I really do. It is too bad this company is full of lies.
