I recently spent some time in the Santa Maria accommodations in Key West and was extremely unhappy. I made my bookings via Expedia.com and have thoroughly read the description of the lodgings and believe we were not fully informed of the standards prior to booking.
The bathroom was full of mold and rust and the tiles on the bottom of the shower were broken and dangerous. The plumbing was questionable in that the entire room shook when the toilet was flushed and the first time my husband used it, it became blocked and there wasn't a plunger available to unblock it. Whenever I showered the water ran hot then cold frequently. There was no hair dryer or iron for our use which has always been provided when I have used a hotel in this country. There was an oven and cook top that I am certain if we were to try to use would blow the entire building up and the fridge did not work.
The seals were rotten and the door did not close. The sheets on the beds were torn and stained. The carpet was also stained and the entire room smelled stale. I am very disappointed that this has cost me over 100 dollars a day when I would expect to pay no more than 30 dollars a day for such low standards regardless of it's location. I intend to pass this information onto my family and friends and will encourage them all to do the same.
I am a visitor to the US and cannot believe that there seems to be no control over the amount people are charging consumers. This place is a RIP OFF. I don't care if it is in Key West or Timbuktoo, charging these prices for such a DUMP is extortion! Because my booking was made via Expedia.com and there is actually no management on site (another point that was not communicated to us until arrival as the neigbouring property did check ins but weren't to helpful when it came to problems), I have put my complaint in writing and hope for a favourable outcome which I will report... If it happens.
