Kicked Out of Cabin for Complaining About Dirty Bathroom

I reserved a cabin at Horseshoe Lake Campground in Gwinn a week before driving 7 hours to get to there. My daughter and her family, my son and his family and their Dad and I were meeting at this campground in anticipation of spending the weekend together since my daughter lives in Minnesota and we don't get to see her and her children very often. The campground is beautiful but I am not happy with the hosts Joe and Kathy Pietro and the disrespectful and unbelievable way they treated me. When I first checked in at the store, Kathy told me that the cleaning lady had left the key in the cabin and that it was unlocked. When I checked the cabin out (The Honeymoon Suite), it was really cute and I was happy with it except for the bathroom. I was surprised when I saw soap scum and hair in the shower however. The shower was dirty, the toilet was brown from rust and you could see where someone had swiped the toilet brush once or twice in it because the rust was lighter in streaks, and there was dirt on the floor. I had a couple of things that I had brought into the cabin when I first went inside. I decided to tell the Kathy about the condition of the bathroom. She said that their regular cleaning lady was out. There was another, younger lady standing in the store when I was telling Kathy about it. The younger lady said that Kathy had her do a little cleaning in that cabin but did not tell her to clean the shower. I told the ladies that the kitchen sink was stained and the bathroom was really dirty, but other than that, it was really clean and cute. Kathy instructed me to give her my key and she'd have the lady go back over and clean it for me. The lady told me that she'd leave the key in the cabin. I was happy that they were going to clean it. When I walked out with the lady, she was upset that she had to clean it and told me that she doesn't normally clean and that her left arm was handicapped. I told her that I'd clean it if they wanted to knock some money off of the $85.00/night fee. I went back over to the campground and sat around the campfire with my family until 10:30pm. That's when my grandchildren and I went to the cabin to finish putting our things inside, but when we got there, it was locked. I went to the host's trailer and asked for the key. She refused to give me one, saying that I was supposed to come back and get it so they thought I didn't want to stay there. I told her that the lady said she'd leave the key in the cabin. I didn't have anywhere to go if I didn't stay there. Kathy told me that her husband said that he thought the cabin wasn't good enough for me and she was going to give me my money back. I told her that I wanted the key, that I reserved the cabin, and I needed a place for me and my grandchildren to sleep. She said the key was in the office and she didn't have one in the trailer. I asked her if she was kicking me out because I told them the bathroom was dirty. When I realized she wasn't going to give me the key, I told her that I had things in the cabin. She said that I'd have to get it in the morning. I told her that I wanted the key and I wasn't going to wait until morning to get my things. So she handed me the key. When I started to walk away, she asked me if I was going to bring it back to her and I told her that I was going to sleep there since I paid for it and didn't do anything that warrented me to be vacated from the property. My daughter and I finished putting my things in the cabin and went back to the campfire. About 11pm, Joe drove over and wanted to talk with me. He told me to get a "feller" to go and get my stuff out of the trailer and told me to get in the truck with him so he could drive me to the cabin. I asked him why he was kicking me out when it's all I did was tell him the bathroom was dirty. I coudn't believe he was doing that. He told me that, "I am the commander around here and have been for 41 years and I make the decisions and I want you to leave the campground." I asked him what I did that was so bad and he said, "I have my reasons." When I told him that I had grandchildren with me and I had no place to go and didn't know the area to find a hotel this late at night. He told me, "That's not my problem." He was going to call the police. So I got all of my stuff back out and repacked it in the car and trunk. I got my check back, but I wanted to have a place to stay. I am not happy with the terrible way me and my grandchildren were treated. I was in shock. I could not believe that this was happening. My 10 and 13 year old grandchildren and I slept in my car that night.

I am so angry. I am not a bad person and I did not have an attitude towards them when I asked that the bathroom be cleaned. I was not drinking or causing any issues whatsoever. It is not asking too much to expect a clean bathroom when I was paying that much a night.

My family and I loved the place at first and planned on making a tradition out of it and camp there every year but invite more family and friends. When my daughter told Joe that, he said, "I'm sure you will find a nice place to camp next year." My family and I will never stay there again and we all have a very bad perception of that place, the hosts, and Gwinn, MI.
