Orbitz Hotel reservation - hotel reservation cancellation procedures or policies

I had a bad experience with a hotel reservation that I had to cancel. I cancelled at around 1 P.M. 2 days prior to the check-in which was at 4 P.M. I read the small print "Non refundable if cancelled after 4:00 PM on (day of check-in). To my surprise at the end it gave me a $000.00 non refundable receipt. I called them up and had not luck. I am only sharing this experience for those that do not understand the Cancellation policies they have to make sure to ask before they make a reservation. Supposedly the only way it could be refundable was that I had cancelled 8 days before. Truly disappointed.
