I entered an agreement to purchased an ARA membership at the Potlatch Resort in LaConner, WA in 1987. Although it took me and my wife five years to fulfill our obligation, we managed to pay off our membership to the sum of over $5000.
In we realized that our quarterly maintenance fees had been increased over 32%. Our contract specifically stated these fee increases would never exceed the percent increase in the National Index for the year immediately prior there to. My complaints were consistently ignored.
This past year I received notice that my quarterly maintenance fees were over $500 past due. ARA threatened to send me to collections if the issue was not resolved. So I called them and made arrangements to send them at least $100 monthly until the account was up to date.
Within 4 months, I had paid them $550 and received a bill stating that I was still over $400 past due. ARA acknowledged receipt of three of my payments but refused to credit my account with the other payments. I had bank statements verifying the checks cleared, but they would not credit my account even after I provided them with the information they requested. Three months ago they stopped answering their phones. A polite answering machine would promise to return calls, but no one ever did.
I received another statement last month once again threatening to send me to collections. Hesitantly, I sent another $200 to stop the collections process. Meanwhile, I have been calling and leaving two to three messages every other day. They still have not answered and none of my messages returned.
I feel as though I have entered into a contract with the devil.
