Charged for a returned item

I ordered elmos learning adventure for my grandchild. It was ok but i kept the initial 3.47 promo package. When the swecond one arrived the price was 33,00 sent it back in 2 weeks. They couldn't find receivership of it at first, then i got a collection agency after me for 43.10 includes late fee. Even thhough i sent it back. I called and paid it directly to the company not collection agency. He said was late being sent back and even though they had received the shipment. I was told i was charged for it because it was not returned within 10 days.
