My wife and I own three parcels of property, which has been recently zoned for commercial use in Las Vegas. Our families moved to Nevada in the early sixties. We started purchasing the land in the mid 1970s. Recently we received a large tax increase from the Clark County Board of Equalization. We attended a hearing for the public conducted by the Clark County agency who issued the public notice. We met one of the members of the board, Jared E Shafer.
Mr. Shafer told us that he would like to have a private meeting with us. He suggested meeting him at the home of his attorney Alan D Freer. My wife felt uncomfortable about accepting Mr. Shafers invitation. We finally decided to attend.
Mr. Shafer offered to purchase our parcels at a price, which was substantially under the market. We flatly refused. Mr. Shafer said I can increase your taxes to a point where it will not be in your best interest to own your parcels. Jared Shafer continued with a threat. He said dont under estimate the power of the government. If we want we can take your property under eminent domain, destroy you financially, or there are things the government will do that no one talks about. Mr. Shafer went on when someone in my position wants something, we usually get it.
Mr. Alan Freer was a witness and he spoke it is in your interest to listen to my client. Clark County will legalize any action we choose to take.
Mr. Shafer stated perhaps we can compromise. I will lower your tax bill to Clark County and you will pay me a fee for lobbying for your interests. Mr. Freer said just think about how lucky you are, you are hiring your own professional lobbyist.
My Wife responded by asking if it would be possible to think about Mr. Shafers proposal for a few days and get back to him. Mr. Shafer agreed to give us 7 days.
Two days later a registered letter from the Clark County board of Equalization appeared, which stated our taxes had been increased an additional 60%. My wife called Mr. Shafer and told him we wanted no part of his offer.
Two weeks passed and we received a call from the Las Vegas police department telling us someone had been dumping garbage on our properties and we were responsible for the cleanup. The county inspector told us they would levy a fine of $500 per day for each day the garbage remained on our properties. I lost my temper and called Mr. Shafer. Mr. Shafer said, god punishes people who wont help themselves.
Weve contacted the governor of the state, Senator Harry Reid, and the Department of Justice. It appears everyone has decided to close their eyes to Mr. Shafers Clark County Board of Equalization criminal activities.
What is happening to us in Las Vegas is a strong warning to all citizens about the corruption big government causes. Jared Shafer has used his public position to enrich himself and his friends. Ive learned he was Clark Countys public guardian from 1979 through 2002. The Internet is full of reports concerning his criminal activities against seniors who had the misfortune to fall under his control. Weve hired an attorney and plan to fight Mr. Shafer and the corrupt Clark County Board of Equalization at every turn. This will destroy us financially, but this is the hill we have chosen to die on.
