In March of 1998, I supposedly agreed - during a telephone conversation - to a 30 day free trial in Smart Source - which later became MWI Homeworks Plus in exchange for a free ticket to fly anywhere in the US. I did not receive this ticket, nor did I ever receive any enrollment materials. I was told that Smart Source/Homeworks Plus is a discount plan for various consumer products, but I never got any list of participating merchants. I also received no annual re-enrollment notice, even though the membership fee increased from year to year and quite significantly between 2002 and 2003.
Not only did I receive none of this material, but I do not even recall the phone conversation from March of 1998.in May of this year, I was told by people at MWI that there is a tape archive of phone solicitations, and that they would find out if my conversation was available. They thought it might be too long ago, but if it existed, I would receive a call during which the tape would be played back to me to prove I had agreed to be in the Smart Source Program. After the 7-10 business days that they promised passed, I gave up hope.
In looking back, I realized my Visa account had been charged annually to a total of $479.75.
The charge for 2004 was up to $159.95. When I called MWI, I was able to cancel this year's "membership" and have this amount credited to my Visa. However, since 1998 I have spent nearly $500 and received NO benefits. I have written a letter to consumer affairs at MWI requesting reimbursement for part or all of this amount.
