Poor Promotion

I purchased two items for over $50. I received a $10 cash card to use in the store. However, I never used the card. I went to return both items and the cashier was deducting $10 for the purchase price. I explained, "I never used the $10, so I am not just gonna hand you $10. Her reply, " well, we handed you $10." What a poor response. There must be a way to track these promotions. Now I am sitting here with two shirts, not knowing what to do. I do know, I will not hand over $10 to a chain store.
