A kid stopped by our home yesterday saying he was selling magazine subscriptions to win a trip to Cancun. I was a little leary at first - I guess I should have gone with that feeling. He was very young - college aged, I presume - and personable. I let my defenses fall and ended up paying too much for 2 magazine subscriptions. He had talked about being first in the contest and that in the past several years it had been won by girls - that he was rather proud of being in first place.
After he left, my husband (rather upset) said that I would never answer the door again. I decided to research the internet. I first found out that the company sponsering the contest had only been in business since November (so much for the years of winners). I could not find anything else - nothing showed on a reverse phone number check, nothing listed in any business directory, etc. I called the "customer service" phone number listed on my receipt and got only a recording. With the time difference, they should have been opened according to the business hours stated in their message.
I was going to try cancelling the subscription but, from reading about how unsuccessful that was from others with the same sort of situation, I cancelled the check. I feel like a complete fool but don't want this happening to anyone else.
