I came to Melbourne FLA for one month. Upon arriving, I went online and ordered one month of Florida Today newspaper. I went to check out and pay, and the total came to $11.52. So that is what I assumed I was paying. A few days later as I checked my bank account, I saw that Florida Today/Gannett actually took $15.99 out of my checking account without my permission. I only agreed to pay $11.52. And then I was told instead of 4 weeks, they ordered me 5 weeks, took that out my checking account, again without my permission.
I was unable for a while to get any of my money returned by their accounting dept., which is where the numerous CSRs I had to speak to told me my refund would be coming from. I finally got so disgusted with them that I filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals office. That office also told me to call there and speak to a Supervisor. I did and spoke to D. She said they owed me a total of $7.90 and I would be receiving it back in my checking account. She only said that after arguing with me that I did check the tip... I definitely did not. I am sure they can check my original receipt, but she wouldn't so that.
Finally these people did return SOME of the money, but STILL owe me $1.65. I will probably NEVER get that amount back. They stole from me. Which the last time I checked is illegal. This is not about the $1.65, but it is about how they scammed me.
I am writing this warning for Florida Today subscribers about using a credit/debit card with this business. They just do as they please with your account and then won't return it. This was a huge lesson to me. Beware!
