King Movers poor service and surprise costs

My moving day started off with Great Lake Movers being 3 hours and 15 minutes late and requesting King movers to call me to help out. I accepted since I was desparate. It was not King Movers fault the previous movers was late but I did not like the feel of things from the start.

The driver from the King Movers van called. He asked if I needed a 24 foot van, I said yes. I asked if it is 2 guys, 40 for the first hour and 40/hour for each hour after that. The driver said yes. The drivers phone was cutting in and out but I heard that was the agreement. Giving them directions and getting them onsite was like pulling teeth.

The showed up and requested a 250 deposit. I was not informed of this. I gave the 190 I had and foolishly signed the agreement they gave me which was not at all what I had agreed upon. Signers beware.

I got 3 guys and a 16 foot van. There is a $40 charge per extra item they deem as heavy, e.G. Wall unit AC. I helped with all the heavy stuff but this did not matter. There is a $20 charge per guy per stair well. This added up to $280 of the $680 they charged. 2 of the guys were newbies, fumbling and were lathargic, were putting blankets on the antiques poorly and did not strap them on plus were stacking my heavy metal patio furniture on it. I was a professional mover so I know how real movers work. They did not have any back harnesses for heavy stuff like fridges. I did not have any pull out couches or appliances but paid for 4 heavy items at 40 a piece.

I did not get everything in the truck so the job would not be completed on my moving day which upset me. Then they said they will not move the truck until I give another $500 cash. I lost it. I requested they unload the van and they said I will have to do it myself. I call the King Movers line and was informed there is a $500 cancelation fee.

I consulted with the police and found I was in a pinch since I signed and this was now a civil matter. I paid the $500 and started the move to my new house. I called to discuss a reduction in price since the job was incomplete and to discuss this heavy item thing. On the contract it said items like pianos, pull out beds and heavy sewing equipment are considered heavy and have an extra charge and then say that heavy items are $40 a piece. My response was the things like pull out couches are $100 and pianos are $250. It felt like a scripted response since I got the same line from the driver. The King Mover head office hung up on me at least 5 times while I was trying to straighten things out.

In the end, I paid $680 when I was willing to pay $400 $500. I have to get another mover or rent a van and get some friends to help to finish the job. The large scratches on the antiques need to be fixed. At least nothing was destroyed but I'm sure it will cost me to fix up what was damaged.

If anyone is to benefit from this report, asking if the movers have back straps to help lift fridges or bands to secure blankets on furniture will go a long way to insure your stuff is handled properly and professionally. Also, never trust that what you agreed on verbally is what is in writing.
