Cross Country Van Lines, Anthony Ayala Damaged Furniture and Movers Were Rude

The company damaged my filing cabinet and dining table. Even though I found the cheapest possible replacements at OfficeMax and WalMart, the company is too cheap to send $280 in compensation and instead keeps stonewalling.

The filing cabinet seemed to be taken down stairs too roughly, and the bottoms and backs of several drawers were broken and my files were all over in the bottom (see photo). The movers took the dining room table apart and lost the bolts needed to reassemble it. When I asked the people who moved it in to reassemble it, they told me that "any idiot can put it together, " but refused to do so themselves.

I called customer service several times so I could begin the claims process, but the company doesn't seem to staff that department. They never answer the phone and even though I left several messages, they never called me back. When I called other departments, they all refused to help me and instead transferred me to the same unstaffed customer service department. I finally wrote a "demand letter, " threatening to take them to small claims court and only then did they send the claim forms. For some inexplicable reason, they demanded notarization on the forms, even though I was providing forms and receipts. I attached a note saying that my information was sufficient, and that I would require a letter from their lawyer explaining why they required notarization, and that then I would add the cost to my claim. The claim remains unresolved.

In addition, I am a single woman who was moving into a rural area, and the company sent sketchy and intimidating movers. They didn't have, or know where to get, the shuttle vehicle that was included in the contract (and that I was paying for) and stonewalled in several ways to try to avoid providing one. The mover said he didn't know he needed one, and I said it was in the contract. The next day he said they couldn't reserve a truck unless I gave them my Visa number. He had such a strong Russian accent that I could barely understand what he was saying, so I asked to speak with his supervisor. He said his supervisor's number was "in his phone" and that he would call me back with the number, but then never called back. They got lost (after I'd tried to give them directions and they'd refused to take them), so I had to go down to the highway to find them because they were too incompetent to find my house.By now it 6:30 pm on the day they'd said they would arrive. They still didn't have the shuttle vehicle. He said I would need to drive him back into town to get one. They demanded that I drive them to my house, in my car, so they could see for themselves why they needed a shuttle vehicle. I showed them that my neighborhood had hilly, single-lane dirt roads and I showed them the line item in the contract. They continued to discuss how they could bring in their truck, even when I said it was against the HOA rules. When I demanded they get the shuttle vehicle I had PAID for, they said they wouldn't be able to deliver until the next day. I said that was fine, as I didn't want those guys at my house at night anyway. When they finally did show up the next day, with a shuttle truck, they were rude and almost threatening about demanding payment. They also got angry that I wouldn't let them drive their truck into my yard.
