Flyaway Farm And Kennel
Terrible company to work for

In 2002 I was hired by Flyaway Farm and Kennels to use working dogs to chase geese off military installations. Being a trained biologist I thought it was a great job for me, to combine my love for dogs and wildlife. I did like the job and found it interesting. I moved from NY to Virginia for this job with a little savings and depending on my first paycheck. Unfortunately I never received an "official" paycheck from this company or it's owners. Flyaway farm and kennels is a fraudulent, unethical company when it comes to it's employees, contacts and product it gives out. I highly recommend you do not work or hire this company.

My first problem with the company was the lack of training for it's employees and the lack of training in it's dogs. My working dog was not trained to jump in the water, a requirement to get rid of stubborn geese, and did not come back to it's handler. While being trained by Rebecca Ryan, the owner, I noticed the dogs didn't even listen to her. I did not see any dog go in the water when commanded, and very few returned to it's handler when called. I also wittnessed a dog being sold to a golf course who did not do as it was told during the demonstration! The excuse was that the dog just got a shot and felt "uncomfortable" going in the water. The real reason was the dogs were not properly trained. I had to personally train my own dog to come when called so she wouldn't run out into traffic. All this from a company that is supposed to be reputable.

My job was to chase geese away from a pond at the military installation of Fort Belvoir. I was told I would be reimbursed for my gas, wear and tear on my personal vehicle, dog food, pet deposit, cell phone bill and vet bills. I was not reimbursed for any of these charges. After my first month of work, since I would be paid monthly, I never received my paycheck. When I called and got a hold of the owner, and that took a while, I was told my checking account # was incorrect, (it wasn't). I was given numerous excuses and lies about why my check was not deposited. I finally received $200.00 from western union for 1 1/2 months worth of work. After my second paycheck was due, (I was still missing around $900.00 from my previous paycheck) it did not arrive in my bank account either. I again call and ask what the problem is and again receive numerous excuses and lies about why it is not there. After complaining enough I received another $200.00 by Western Union.

The owner of the company did not care that I could not pay my rent or even feed her dog. I told her her dog was being fed hamburgers and corned beef because that was all I had. It didn't matter, she was recieving free labor for a period of 3 months from me before I finally quit. I finally refused to go to work untill my entire 3 months of pay was in my bank account. I recieved $800.00 which I took to drive home.

I was told by Virginia labor board that my only recourse was to sue, which was difficult since now I was unemployed. I never received an official pay stub but did recieve a W2 with a fraudulent amount that was supposedly paid to me.

This company is unethical and when speaking with other companies that are ethical in the working dog industry, I realized too late that Flyaway Farm and Kennels has a bad reputation when it comes to their "highly trained dogs".

Do not work or hire this company. The owner Rebecca Ryan is unethical, a liar and is dishonest when it comes to her employees and contracts.
(Sorry if this is a double entry the first one did not go through.)
