The UPS Store #950
$1500 Insured Computer Missing Blu-ray Drive, Claim Denied

June 22: I shipped a package to Bloomington, IN with $1500 worth of insurance. The contents of the package were a computer with a Blu-ray drive in it. The desk clerk's name was Danny. Photos of the computer's condition before shipping are available. Total cost: $47.69.

June 24: The package arrived in Bloomington, IN. Upon opening it, the recipient found the Blu-ray drive missing and the case severely damaged. Pictures and video of the damage were taken and are available for review.

June 25: UPS picked up the damaged package to assess the damage and process the insurance claim.

June 28: The recipient called the UPS hotline to inquire about the status of the insurance claim and was told that it can take up to 6 days to process.

June 29: UPS tracking showed that the package had arrived back at UPS Store #950.

June 30: The recipient contacted UPS Store #950 about the claim and asked to speak to a manager. No one was available at that time, but 10 minutes later he got a call back from Brian, who said the claim would not be honored.

July 1: After receiving a voicemail from Danny stating that the insurance claim had been denied, I stopped at UPS Store #950. At that time, I was told that the insurance had not in fact been denied but had yet to be inspected, so I left and waited to hear official word.

July 6: The recipient contacted UPS Store #950 and spoke to Brian regarding the claim and was told that the claim had been denied. When he asked about the missing parts, Brian said there was no investigation or claim for the parts pending. A lawsuit was mentioned.

A few times between July 6 and July 31, I tried to contact UPS Store #950 to find out about the progress of the claim. Frustrated with getting the runaround on the phone, I visited the store and spoke with a manager/supervisor named Patty. She told me the claim was closed. However, armed with information from a direct source at UPS, I mentioned that UPS's claim was still open, whereupon she checked and confirmed that it was still open, after having lied to me outright. Next, they tried to blame the padding/lining of the box, saying it was not thick enough. I used a measuring tape and was able to prove that it was in fact thick enough to meet the requirements specified on the UPS website. The most recent claim they have made is that the packaging, which was the original packaging for the case in which I built the computer, advertised the package's contents, thus making it my responsibility if a UPS employee stole contents from the sealed package.
