Asked for extra deposit (s) at last minute, gave our stuff to broker, never arrived

Nationwide Relocation Services made our move into one of the most stressful things we have ever done in our entire lives. They asked for a bigger deposit a week before we were leaving (Indiana to California) after we had planned our entire drive to CA with our dogs in our car. They then had another company (Best Price Movers, neither the best price nor movers) come pick up and load our stuff and after the truck was loaded, that company asked for more money, so we packed even less than we originally told them we would be bringing, including leaving all of our patio furniture, a desk and a set of rims. Nationwide then called to tell us our remaining balance and they wanted $700 more than we originally agreed on because our "weight" went over even though we originally signed a "binding" contract which comes along with an extra several hundred dollar fee.

Best Price Movers took our stuff to Chicago and even after the time window was up for us to have our stuff here in CA, they never even loaded it into a truck nor left Chicago. We were sick of not knowing where our belongings would be (along with buying a ton of stuff so we could eat, shower, etc.) so we bought a last-minute plane ticket for the husband to fly home and rented an $1100 truck, ended up spending several hundred in gas as well. Not only were we never reimbursed for anything, we were told by customer service representatives that they would try to help us and then never saw a penny back. Best Price Movers forced us to pay a $1500 "pickup fee" that was not in a single contract and wouldn't let us take our stuff until we paid it. We called the police but they were helpless due to it being a civil matter. Nothing was ready for us to pack so we had to ask the moving co's employees to help load the truck and they wouldn't do it unless we gave them MORE money! The woman at the moving company tried to say that we had made an appointment for 9 A.M. And couldn't get our things until two days later because we were "late." We actually told them that there was no way we would be there until after 11 in the first place! Once we pointed out the indiscrepencies in the so-called contract, she gave up and let us have OUR things.

My husband then drove across the country alone in a huge moving truck in the middle of the winter and got caught in a blizzard, needed to pay some big rig $200 to get himself out of the ice on the side of the road.

When we finally got our belongings and unloaded them, the movers had caused hundreds (probably thousands) of dollars worth of damage. We have several dozen pictures of our damaged items and are currently filing an insurance claim, although I doubt we'll get as much as all of that stuff was worth - note that this includes a rocking chair my father refurnished for me for our wedding gift, along with tons of dishes shattered, decorations smashed, a lazy boy broken, and headboard and handmade table cracked. Ruined forever.

We're also pursuing this legally and determined to get at least this made-up pickup fee back. We were originally told that Nationwide was "not a broker, but a door-to-door service." False. We were told the estimate and deposit were binding. False. Do not trust anything these people tell you. If only we had those conversations recorded! Talk about regret! We even called up after reading some reports on BBB saying that they always ask for second deposits and the representatives reassured us that this was not the case. What a joke!

If we had known the disaster and headache that would result from this situation, we would have planned to drive ourselves out and saved our entire savings account. We sold his car, lost that money from this, saved up for the move for over a year, lost that money, we were left with NOTHING. Had to start over, but not in the hoped-for or refreshing sense. There are so many different things wrong with this situation that I have probably forgotten several other terrible details. It was traumatic, unnecessary, cruel, and these companies are obviously just out for your money and will say anything to get it.

I have no idea how we didn't find this rip off report when we were researching the company, but if I could rewind it to that phase of the process, we would never have called these people in the first place.
