72 hour weeks, less than minimum wage

I was an employee for this company for 2 months. The most money i ever made for a 72 hour work week was 210 dollars, pay is based solely on commision, that is less than 3 dollars an hour. A typical work day consisted of getting to the office around 9:00 A.M. Learning or teaching classes untill around 10:30. Then it was time for a cheesy "motivational" meeting before we left for the field. The field consisted of either a neighborhood, a business district, or a table outside of walmart.

The objective was to sell as many coupon books as possible using a wheelchair basketball team for a sales pitch. Sales pitch: "Hello, im out working on our 7th annual community awareness program for the wheelchair basketball team the denver rolling nuggets, instead of asking for donations we get alot of your local businesses to do the donating, we put it all together into a promotional package for you guys, here check it out." we then proceeded to wait for a buying sign when we would drop the 30 dollar price on them. 30 dollars for a coupon book. Granted, the coupon books are totally worth it, but only about 1 to 2 people a day buy the book because of the value. The other 4 to 6 people buy the book because they are pushed into it with pushy sales tactics, or they are tricked into thinking that their money is going to a good cause.in reality 33% goes to the salesman, 33% goes to the owner of the company, and the rest gets split up in the upper levels of the company. Only 50 cents of the 30 dollars goes to the team or whatever charity they are "supporting." if you are the type of person who doesnt feel right about tricking people out of their money or pushing people with cheesy sales tactics, so basically if you are a genuine good person, this is not a good job for you. They do not compensate you for your gas driving to and from the field which is sometimes 60 miles a day.

So the 20 or 30 dollars a day i was making all went to gas and food. You might think that food isnt necessary and i would have agreed with you prior to taking the job, me being 6 feet tall and only 140 pounds im not the heaviest eater, but a work day consists of taking 100 houses a day and working them 3 times around rain, snow, ice, sub-zero temperatures, i went out in all of it for 20 or 30 dollars a day sometimes less, because i didnt like using disabled kids to make me money and i didnt get any satisfaction out of pushing people to buy a coupon book. If i wrote this letter prior to quitting this next section might say something nice about the owners because they were both way cool people while i was with the company. To be honest the only reason i was with the company was because i was flat broke. I was broke when i started and i was broke the entire time i worked there. When i came across a little bit of money i had no motivation to stay so i just quit.

I left peacefully i told both owners thank you for everything you did for me thanks for trying to teach me and all of that but its just not going to work for me. Thats when they showed their true colors. The situation i was in was that a guy had wrote me a bad check for 4 coupon books, which by the way makes the books your responsibility. You have to pay for them because of someone else being irresponsible. Anyways after i found out i immediately started trying to get the books back. I didnt have the 68 dollars at that point to pay for the books so i had to try to get them back from the guy. After one day i started getting threats from the owner via other employees. He couldnt even call me and tell me himself. I hope this serves as a warning for anyone who recieves an invitation to go to an interview.

The economy sucks right now and for a lot of people this is the only company who offers an interview if you have a car that gets good mpg and you are ok with the things i have mentioned in this letter then i would advise you to take it as a temporary job take advantage of the first weeks training pay (make sure you get it though) but to keep looking for other opportunities.
