Ivins Group
Very unethical

I appilled for a job with the Ivins group in Monroeville. At first everything was normal. Three interview process, seemed ok. I ad I applied to was on monster. It was an entry level job that stated it paid 32,000-39,000. That was the first lie. I went for first interview, everything was ok. I guy interviewing me stated that they are a sports marketing company. So I set up a job shadow for the following day. When I arrived the next day I participated in the job shadow to find out that it was a sales job. (which in my years of school is considerd direct marketing) I was never told this, I figured it out when we left the office and went to various business. The guy I was job shadowing told me that we were going to meet with clients. Clients are usually people or business that you work with or have worked with. We went company to company all day long trying to sell a coupon book. On the ride to these places I asked to see what we were offering these companies. I was handed a folder with at least 50 to 100 pages of sports teams tickets. (just like they said) so when we arrive at the companies we were not selling sports tickets, we were selling coupon books for DARE, which has nothing to do with sports. It gets worse. We went to hotels, gym, small personal business, gas stations, convient stores, industrial, warehouses, etc... The first problem I had was some of the places had signs on their doors that said no solisitation. We went in any ways to try to sell them. Which is very unethical if not illegal. Then the sales pitch they used was basically a lie. They said the dare program was getting cut in local school. Which it might have been, but they would claim different schools at different location. One of the school I know of because my friend is a dare teacher their, and that program was not getting cut. So they were just liying to people to make the sales. Then I asked what the pay was like. That was when I found out that it was a commission only pay. Well I did the math. Were were selling 25 dollars books, and i would receive around 9 dollars a book. TO make 32,000 a year i would have to sell 3556.in the whole day of shadowing with three employees that work their, I believe they sold 25- 30. Which is around 10 a piece for the three employess. Which is not even 100 dollars for the nine hour day. Figure out the years worth of income and I would have been making under 20,000 dollars a year. So where was the 32,000-39,000 dollars. I understand that maybe that was a bad day, but come on the guy I was job shadowing said they shoot for about 10 sales a day per person. So I think that it was a good day. Next problem, I would have to use my own car. THats fine if i get reimbursed. He then told me that you do not get reimbursed nor do you get a company gas card, but he did tell me that you can write off the gas and miles on your taxes. Which you can write off some miles but gas i do not think so. About have way though the day he got a phone call and told one of the other employees that another co worker, (in a different car, working a different area) had got her car towed. If these were clients that were are working with then why are people getting their car towed? The biggest thing that bothered me was one of the areas that we went to was a Etna. WHich is a small town that in the past two years has got flooded and amost all the business owners and people lost everything. I do not feel good about taking money for people who need it to help a program that was not getting cut.By this point I got my hands on one of these coupon books. They cost 25 dollars and only. 50 cents thats right half of a dollar went to the dare program. Even if they sold a million of these books dare would only get 500,000 dollars where as THe IVINS Group would get 24,500, 000 dollars. So who are they helping out themselves only. Finally at the end of the day we arrived back at the office, where I see the guy I was job shadowing hand one of the employees that was with us for the day, cash. NO check but the cash we were receiving for these books. I do not know how much he handed him but when are they paying taxes, or did we have to pay are own taxes? Why wouldnt you get paid in a check? Seemed to me like some illegal or out of the ordanary was going on. Then the man turned toward me and said that they would notifiy me by today if i got the job or not. (which i would not take) I have still never received a call and i dont expect to. But my favorite thing of all is the man I was job shadowing told me he went to Yale an IVY league school. I have went to college not at an IVY League school but a small state school and I have never heard of a company: not paying with check, doing unethical sales, or just flat out liying to a potental employee.
