I recently opened an account with Conn's to build credit history. The first payment was due January 11th. I had not received a statement or coupon book and thought payments were due the 16th. I began getting "automated" phone calls on the 12th and assumed it was a telemarketing agency. Since the automated message did not identify that it was from Conn's I had no clue and did not bother to call back. We all get those annoying calls at home and don't bother.
To make things better I was out of my office that week and apparently they had been calling my work line as well. On the 14th I believe the collection agent was trying to be slick and called my works main line and asked for me by first name only. Bad bad bad idea. There are 2 other employees with the same first name, and sure enough the called was transferred to not me, but my co-worker. They went right into their spiel of the account being past due and that a payment needed to be sent.
My co-worker was certainly confused because she does not have an account with Conn's and began to ask questions. Finally my co-worker asked if they had reached the correct person. When the Conn's rep said my last name my co-worker informed them they had the wrong person. Wait it gets better!!! I get to work the next Monday and to my horror my co-worker pulls me aside and asks me if everything is alright and if I need money help. I'm confused, embarrassed and asked why the concern. She then told me about the Conn's collection agent contacting her in error. I was furious!!!
Of course I called Conn's customer service to complain. The response from the unprofessional, uncaring rep was "We're sorry, is there anything else we can help you with". And finally the kicker... My payment that was 4 days past due was only $19.28!!! I think it's absurd that they are spending money on collection efforts for an account 4 days past due of $20.00!!! No wonder their finance charges are sky high!
