I was a DirecTV customer for five years.
After months of problematic service, I called to cancel. They begged me not to and asked for one more chance to correct the situation. I reluctantly agreed, but told them this would be their final shot at keeping me. If their solution did not work, I would cancel my service.
Their answer was to send me new equipment at no cost to me for leasing, shipping or anything else. (I have emails to confirm this.)
When I received the equipment, I installed it. It did not work, so I called DirecTV to cancel, and I told them I would.
They again begged me not to cancel and even offered me $100 in cash to stay with the service. I declined all offers, as it was obvious they could not fix the issues. They then told me I would be charged an early termination fee and the cost of the equipment, including shipping.
I reminded them that my agreement had expired years ago and that they had promised the equipment at no charge as long as I returned it at the termination of service. They told me that when I accepted the equipment, they automatically started a new agreement. What?!
I told them I was never notified or advised of a new agreement and that I did not verbally authorize or sign one. Why would I even consider that with the service being so bad? This is the best part: they told me they did not need my authorization because the information was posted on their website! Absolutely amazing, and brazen to boot.
After numerous letters to DirecTV asking them to provide proof of an agreement between us, which of course they cannot, they maintain that I owe them $332.
If this isn't deceptive trade practice, I don't know what is. I know the economic times are bad, but resorting to these tactics is outrageous and must be illegal. I am asking for your help in getting DirecTV to see the error of their ways. My account should show a zero balance, and I should not have to worry about a bad mark on my credit report.
